7MM08. But that would only be for whitetail. But I am glad I am not stuck with just one.  :D  :-D

Only one?  That would have to be my Savage 99 in .300 with a vintage
    Weaver 3X scope.

One Whitetail Cartridge
« Reply #13 on: January 25, 2006, 05:02:06 AM »
No doubt about it . . . .25-06.

The query didn't say a whitetail cartridge that can do other stuff like hunt Elk or bears.

For hunting whitetails, I would prefer to pull my .25-06 out of the cabinett than my .30-06.

You guys are going to make fun, but the 300 Win Mag.  Sorry, every deer I have taken with a 300 has been instant and right where they stand.

Very interesting. I did not think I would see so many 30-06's. Deerman12, where do you shoot them to make them drop in their tracks?  Sean

Blue',I agree, but since I bought a Tikka, and ALL of them are long action (the short action cartridges just have the bolt stop in a different location,so you are not gaining anything by having a short action round) I picked a 25-06 and heck,I've GOTTA stick by the one I hunt with   :-D  :D

For whitetail?  Beats he11 our of me.

Of the guns I have or any gun I want?

They're kind of small.  My .257 Roberts or .308 Win should do the trick.

First choice - .270 Winchester
Second choice - 25-06
Third choice - .280 Rem.
Interesting - they are all based on the 30-06, my favorite all purpose cartridge for north American hunting.  I don't hunt the big bears.
