Calling Question
« on: January 23, 2006, 02:13:11 PM »
Hello everyone

This is my first year hunting Coyotes and I've read just about every thing there is to read on the net about Coyote hunting. I bought the Primos Lil Dog call and watched the Mastering the art DVD over and over pausing and rewinding praticing the calls (drives the wife crazy) When Ive been out hunting I have just been using the rabbit destress, don't feel I have the howling down to well yet. The quetion I have is how long should a person call for and then long should you wait before calling agian? I've been calling untill I'm out of breath (about 30 sec's) waiting about 2 minutes and calling again, should I be waiting longer between calls or does it matter? Seems old Randy just blows on the the thing and the yotes are running in from all directions

Thanks for any advice

Welcome To Graybeard Outdoors Lars :D
Sounds like you are doing ok but need to throw in one more element....
It's called Patience. Success rates are around 1 critter called in for every 10 calling sites. You can do better than this through experience or changing up on calls such as throwing a howler in the works.
Keep at it and good luck. I guarantee you will be hooked when you get that first yote in. :D

Lars,
What part of the country are you hunting? Out west there is very little cover for the coyotes and you can see them at greater distances. In the east where I live, there is a lot of cover and they use it to check you out. Patience is the name of the game. You want to call enough to bring the coyote in but not enough that he finds where you are hiding. I call for 30 seconds and then wait 10 minutes just scanning.

I practice my calling on the back porch and even though I don't think I sound like a dying rabbit, I have consistantly called in dogs, cats, possums and coons. I called in a coyote once that snatched a live rabbit out of the yard not 10 feet from me. That really startled me because I didn't know he was there until he hit the rabbit.

Find what works in your area and good luck, I love this sport!
