Scope bases
« on: January 23, 2006, 11:43:07 AM »
Maybe I've mentioned this gripe before, but it just seems to me that a rifle manufacturer who sells his rifles without iron sights ought to have a scope base machined in as an integral part of the receiver.  Ruger, Tikka, and Sako are right on in this regard.  Why don't other manufacturers follow suit?

Also, I always prefer to install a one piece base on my rifles (I don't own any Ruger, Tikka, or Sakos).  I just figured it's a more accurate set up.  Is this the case, or doesn't it matter on anything other than a benchrest rig?

Your thoughts . .  .    .

Sodbuster,
gotta figure unless a mfr. is designing a new receiver, they probably won't go back and redesign/retool for an integral base only.

I imagine there are some end users that definitely don't want an integral base (IE custom rifle builders) and some mfrs. own a large portion of that market.

As for myself, I am with you. I will gladly save a buck with an integral base if it was offered on the rifle I wanted. :money:

I don't agree. I don't buy guns which have the machined in bases. Hate them with a passion. That's plenty reason enough for me to pass on guns that do that. There are plenty out there for folks who like it so don't try to ruin it for those of us who don't. I like to decide what base/ring/scope combo I want on my gun and not have the gun maker decide it for me.

Rings and mount in one solid piece.  I've got three (light Weight) and really like them.  They really make a rifle look good.  About $40 including postage.  You asked about Rugers.  My one and only Ruger is a 77 Compact 257.  It appears to be the strongest and well thought out rifle I own.  However, it is also the least accurate.  I'm working on the third barrel, but not having much luck.  I know there are things I can do to help it, but don't think I should have to.  You might think of getting a Winchester model 70.  Their just as good as the rest and may fetch high dollars in the future since they are closing down.
