Remington 870 Replacement Barrel??
« on: January 21, 2006, 09:50:47 AM »
I have an older Remington 870 that was at one time a police riot gun with 18 inch barrel. I want to buy a barrel and make this a turkey hunter but am confused about exactly which Barrel will work. The present gun is 2 3/4 in chamber. I want a newer barrel with the Rem Choke system but all I see are advertised as 2 3/4 in or 3 inch.

My question is  can I install one of the newer 870 Barrels with RemChoke and if so can I shoot 3 inch shells in it?

Thanks

No. You'll only be able to shoot 2-3/4" shells as that's what your gun is made for.

You can install one of the newer Remchoke barrels but you'll have to stick with 2 3/4" ammo. If I remember right 3" won't eject properly.

Here is another thought.  If you have the money, a used 870 Express (3 inch) can be had for very little $. This would allow you to tke advantage of todays great 3 inch turkey loads. I saw one today in a shop for $225.00.  It is plain-Jane, but for a turkey gun, a matte finish is a big plus.  I use mine for everything from rabbits to whitetails, and home defense in the off-season.  As you probably know all kinds of barrels and accessories are available for these guns for down the road.

Yea, even though you're buying a barrel that will accept 3" shells, your receiver still won't. It would be risky putting 3" shells in. Good luck on you quest.  :D
