dumb what if question
« on: January 19, 2006, 10:58:04 PM »
OK....... What if some one made a high stakes (you chose how high) bet against your ability to shoot a sub MOA group with a rifle you have never shot, right off the rack at the gunstore of your choice.......what brand would you chose? Not what kind do you like or use or have or want...... but what brand of rifle would you be willing to bet would shoot perfect with factory ammo right out of the box? I am talking about regular rifles here, no tricked out multi-thousand dollar target rigs.   I know this is a dumb question, but i just want to hear what people really trust as far as accuracy goes, one chance one gun.

Thats a fair question but the answeres you get will be varied by so many.My experience with the three rifle companies that I deal with, being Winchester,Remington and Ruger, yes,I like all three and can't seem to find anything wrong with any of them,I'd say that the Ruger that I once had in 338  win mag, always gave me sub moa, right from the box.I sold it because of financial difficulties and that was very hard.I'm sorry for it today. In my case, the edge goes to Ruger.

My first choice would be a Sako and an extremely close second would be a Tikka.  Both of these rifles come with a guarantee to shoot MOA groups with factory ammunition.  I have two Tikkas and they both shoot under MOA with no modifications.

Easy.  I'd pick a XR-100 in .223 with a T36 Weaver scope.
When I got mine, using generic ammo that I had loaded for another rifle, I shot a factory match and my 5 five shot groups agg'ed .6something.

Sako/Tikka----never seen one that wouldn't do sub-MOA right out of the box----just scope it---sight it in---and you're good to go.

Tikka,Sako or the sub moa weatherby vangaurd......heck,the vangaurds come with a TARGET :D

I think it's a pretty good topic,myself

I like Winchester,Ruger,Remington,Marlin and OWN all of the above,BUT I trust the Tikka the most,It shoots the best and I would fully expect another one to perform the same

i was actualy thinking that many people might swallow their pride and go with a savage/stevens, lol. We all know that they shoot! wondering how many people would bet (bigbucks/their life)  that a remington/winchester would shoot perfect right out of the box .....lol!

My Sako & WBY did it right out of the box. No sight in just fire and the groups were 1" :D

Did this with Factory Ammo. First time rifle fired

Here is my experiences
« Reply #9 on: January 20, 2006, 10:43:05 AM »
Both of my Tikkas(.25-06 Rem. and .223 Rem) shot sub MOA with
factory ammo, right out of the box, after I zeroed the scope.  I have
a Savage 16, that did with handloads, since I never bought factory
ammo for it.  I am pretty sure it would have shot sub MOA, with
factory ammo, if I would have chosen 50 gr. bullets.  I have a
Savage Striker that took a little work, so that one did
not shoot sub MOA with factory ammo out of the box.  I have a
Howa 1500, that also took a little work.  Both do now, with a little
tuning, and with their favorite handloads.

So, given my experience with Tikkas, I would say that would be my best
chance with factory ammo out of the box.

I have a couple of AR-15's that also shot sub MOA, out of the box.
The RRA Varminter shot ridiculously small groups, out of the box.

the sako/tikka looks like the most trusted so far. remember i am talking about walking in to a random gunstore, grabbing a random gun manufactured by (M) and than grabbing a box of shells made by factory (F) in caliber (C).................and takeing a shot at 300 yards .... no practice no tune up .....just a rawdog shoot out ...... print a 3 inch group.
so my question is ........M+F+C= $3,000,000 and a life time carear as a hunter...lololololol

What amazes me is that so far EVERYBODY has picked 2 brands...well,3 but Sako and Tikka are made in the same factory.............c'mon,SOMEBODY has got to trust Remmington (Graybeard?? :D ) Ruger,Winchester and all the rest???    otherwise they wouldn't have such a loyal following (I own all but Remmington, but from now on I will probably buy Tikkas)

Give me a Savage/Stevens, but I don't have any experience with a new Sako or Tikka.   My Rems shoot great, but all have had work done on them.
I have a Ruger 77V .220 Swift that is very accurate with no work whatsover, but I am not sure if that is the norm.   :?   I have not been overwhelmed by the Winchesters I have shot.

I think I would be comfortable in the bet with a Stevens .243.   :)

I'd go with savage.  If I was forced to use factory ammo, I'd go with the Winchester 45g varmint pack in .223.  My 12fv put 5 shots into an inch the first time I tried Win ammo.

My 110 that I just rebarreled with a factory take off 25-06 shot handloads into 1" the first day I shot it.  The .270 barrel it replaced also shot Federal premium into 1".  My other 110 in 270 also into an inch with handloads or Federal premium.  My father-in-law's 40year old 340d in .222 puts 40g V-max in almost 1/2".  Dad's Savage 99 308, shot a 1" group ..........Once!

Of course, I can't afford many rifles besides Savage and Milsurp, So I don't know much about the others.

My surplus Swiss k-31 ($100) gets near an inch with open sights!

The "walk into a gunshop" part of this reminds me of a gunshop near me. It is run by a crusty Marine who won several medals in Korea and walks with a limp due to bullets and mortar fire. Nobody tells him what to sell and he sells nothing but bolt guns. You can get any new rifle you want as long as you want Savage, Tikka or Howa. I asked him one time why no Rugchestmingtons and he told me he was tired of quality control complaints from purchasers. He says nobody complains about the rifles now. He once ordered 3 Remington SPS rifles and returned two to the distributor for problems. That ended Remingtons in the inventory. He doesn't sell expensive rifles because there aren't that many people around here who have the money.
