FWIW-
Bad news is that Federal has discontinued it's only 35 Whelen load with the 225 Trophy bonded bear claw.  This was a popular factory load for 35 Whelen users at 2600 fps.  It was also thus a good supply of nickel plated brass.  Just info for all the soon to be NEF 35 Whelen owners.  Factory, there is still Remington and Nosler.  Rolling your own is probably still the best bet.  

Good news is Federal's site has had some nice upgrades to the ammo guide including graphical displays and bullet info/pics.

35 Whelen is still a sleeper non magnum big game cartridge.  Please folks take NEF up on their offer when they become available, maybe they will continue to give us what we ask for.

You'r so right about the .35 Whelen being a sleeper near magnum caliber.  Every year I see older hunters coming to Alaska carrying the .35 Whelen.  They are going for Moose and Bears with the .35s.  I ask them why they picked the .35 Whelen.  Their response is usually "A hard hitting cartridge that has reasoniable recoil.

Perhaps Federal dropped their factory offering a year too soon.

Up until 2006 the only way to get a Whelen was to pay big bucks, either custom or Remington CDL.  I did the cheap route and put a .35 Whelen Adams & Bennet bbl on a Savage110.

Now NEF will offer a lower cost option for people who are interested in the cartridge but do not want to blow their child's college tuition on it.  As a result, there will be more .35 Whelen owners.  Since there'll be more Whelen owners that mean the sales of Whelen brass, bullets, and factory ammo will increase.

That's good news for Remington - I just wish Federal would have stuck around with theirs since the Remington loads do not do the Whelen justice.

Can anyone give me an indication of what to expect for recoil from a NEF chambered for Whelen?  Has anyone shot hot .30-06 or .300WM loads from such a lightweight gun?

Dropping one of the best 35Whelen loads & adding 338 Federal, now that's progress!  :-D   :)

I've seen a-lot of the Federal TBBC being closed out on several different calibers..I picked up some of the 140 grain 280 loads they won't be producing anymore and some of the 150 grainers too...They were more than 1/2 off their normal price..That's a shame..everyone says they are such a good bullet too....

My 35 Whelen didn't kick bad..nor did my 30-06...My 338-06 loading of 180 Accubond at 3050fps..out of my Handi it isn't bad either..it's like a very stout 30-06 load..I haven't tried maxing it out yet...don't really see a need to yet..nor have I put my Limbsaver on it..too many other projects happening..

I did shoot some 200gr Rem. CLPSP at 2750fps in my RMEF Ultra, .35W.
While not pleasant and mild, certainly nothing to get scared of.
I usually shoot a 215gr, rn, gc cast at 2200-2450fps, the 2200 is actually pleasant.

Hey guys Conley  also makes a few different loads for the 35 Whelen. I think you will see quite a  few orders in 35 Whelen with NEF now manufacturing  it in the handi rifle and the new remington 750 woodsmaster also. I will be ordering the remington within the next two weeks. Later Tanoose

I shoot nothing but 250gr bullets out of my .35 Whelen Handi.  Recoil is not bad just a might over the 30-06.

Dakota they simply wern't selling if you go to the 2006 ammunition list you'll  find quite a few loads dropped from there line.

Tanoose,

I think the point is that perhaps if Federal had waited another year or two before making their decision to keep or drop the Whelen they may have decided differently.  This would be because there are more guns being offered in said chambering in 2006.

Been unable to find any Federal .35 Whelen ammo.  I've been looking since I first seen this thread.  If Remington's sales of .35 Whelen picks up then Federal will probably bring it back.  They keep a close eye on what the other manufactors are selling.  I just wanted the silver colored cases.  I seldom buy factory ammo.

I agree Sourdough. As long as I have the proper dies most of the centerfire I shoot is handloaded. In fact I am waiting for a set of .22 Hornet dies to get here from Canada as we speak, I hope they are here today, they were mailed out on 4/18. Factory ammo is however a great way to get brass, especially if it's on closeout or on sale. I even occasionally find factory ammo priced less than I can load it for! For some reason I cannot pass the table's where gunshops have closeout/sale/second hand(factory) ammo without stopping and giving it a good look. I have too much ammo now but it still draws me when I see it :oops: ....<><.... :grin:

Question, is it really possible to have TOO much ammo? :-D  :-D

Yes definitely.  That is the reason we must get out and get "rid" of some on a regular basis.

Here's a neat trick that might be worth a try:  when your ammo stores get a little fat, start stashing boxes of shells in the kitchen and bathroom drawers and cupboards.  Then when your wife gets irritated, just tell her you've got to store it someplace.  She will then insist that you get your butt out to the range to get rid of it.

I have the opposite problem...Not enough ammo to shoot in all my guns.
