newbe? about .270AI
« on: January 17, 2006, 06:50:40 PM »
Hello all  :D
I have been toying with the idea of making a .270Ai on a mauser action is this worth while or are there better 7mm wildcats out there?(I just have the itch to own a 7mm)  I really like the idea of fire forming factory ammo since I dont do much in the way of reloading bottle neck cases I figure this would be a good starter for me. I appreciate your help.

Thanks
Jeremy

Why not a 280 Ackley Improved.  A great round.  I am going to do one in the future.

What are the 280Ai numbers as opposed to the factory 280rem? I looked at midway and dies are cheaper for 280Ai than they are for 270Ai so that a deffinite selling point. Am I right in thinking that .270 and .280 are ballistic clones?

Thanks
Jeremy

Sorry but the .270AI is not a 7mm. For that you might try the 280 AI.

They are very, very similar, afterall there's just a 0.007" difference in diameter between them.  What one will do the other will too.

A typical Ackley Improved version of a cartridge like the .280 gives a gain of only about 100 fps over the parent case at the same pressures.  The Ackley case sure looks cooler though!

I know P.O Ackley gave detailed info on all hiss stuff. Does his work still hold true today with the improvements in powders not that I am complaning 100 extra fps goes along way on a bullet with a bc like the 160gr vld's. All in All I think I am sold. Does any one own one that can give input on how it shoots (280Ai that is)

I don't own one but that is a common chambering for custom rifles.
Some AIs offer more improvement than others. I suspect the 280 is near the top of the list.

"There are at least 8 wildcats that are made from the small primer .308 x 1.5" brass, including some very successful benchrest rounds, including the Benchrest Remington family of cartridges, .22 BR, 6mm BR, 6.5mm BR, 7mm BR, .30 BR."
