My new custom rifle
« on: January 17, 2006, 01:04:13 PM »
I just got this together.  1999 Montana Rifleman, Octagonal barrel in stainless, custom metal work done by Dennis Olson; banded front sight, banded barrel band, express rear sight, jeweled bolt, and checkered bolt handle, finish work done by Falcon Gun Finishing, Titanium and black Falcon Coat Extreme, and finally the stock was done by Accurate Innovations on a Myrtle blank I sent them.  The photos should speak for themselves.

I hope the pictures post ok, first try.

I haven't made it to the gunclub yet.  When I do Ill post my results.  The pictures are good but you should hold the rifle in your hands and turn it over & over the wood is alive.

I almot went with their new PH action but I was talked out of it.  I can highly recomend Accurate Innovations for the stock.  They put an aluminum chassis and two titanium pins in the wrist.  I just love this rifle.  It likes all factory ammo, slings them into < 1.5 inches.  Do I bother to work up some handloads?

That is a beauty! I have seen the fish scale in a few pictures before, how is the grip? Please give us a report on how it shoots. Hope fully that will be equal to the spectacular piece you have.

To the folks worried about scratching a custom stock. Don't! With that level of work, the finish is easy to fix (if not, you should have a serious talk with your stock maker!), and the wood used is not the stuff you are familiar with. On a previous post (http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/smf/index.php/topic,83441.0.html) about Interarms -X, I put up 2 photos of stocks that had been repaired. The Walnut had been stored in a leather gun case that a dog had lifted his leg on. It took about 1/2 a day to take care of all that. Now the metal was another thing... that was bad. He put it away because he dropped it out of a deer stand on to a rock. That "dent" is pretty much gone too (the dead center of the cheek piece (sorry about the quality of the photo, it is the only pic I have of the area)

The maple stock in the Interarms photo has been dragged through the woods for 20+ years by myself and my Dad. It has been beat up like any other rifle....except this one is easy to fix when that happens.

BTW, I guess I should mention I build gun stocks for a living.

Take care,
Chris

Chris,

I don't think photobucket allows direct linking.  Therefore.. Your picture is nowhere to be seen here  ???

dummy here erased it from photo bucket.... kinda hard to show it now.

well, there is more like it at . All but the dueling pistols is my work. The pistols are being re-converted to flint lock
http://s96.photobucket.com/albums/l185/CKn-01/?action=firstLogin

now that I have shown true bad sportsman ship in hi jacking this thread.... my apologies.

I'll take this some one where else.

The fish scale....went to a wood working show in Atlanta this past weekend. There was a fellow that does a lot of hand carving, one of his displays had the same fish scales, and looked to be about the same size. I am guessing each one is hand carved? Good grief, I thought checkering was bad....nothing compared to that. Anyone know how it is actually done? The vendor was showing something like a cross between a Dremel and a dentist air driven drill. Worked very nicely too....and I bet a price tag to match. I was afraid to ask.

Take care,
Chris

Chris,

The fish scale on my Custom was done at Accurate Innovations and it was done by lazer.  I was worried it would look burnt bat no.  I am very pleased how the gun came out.

Laser?!
« Reply #21 on: August 31, 2006, 01:03:43 PM »
yikes. THat's gotta be cheaper and sight easier then what I do. Differant I have to admit. I'm going to have to look into this. THe biggest problem with lasers is the flat appearance. Your carving has plenty of variations, so I guess they have worked out another kink. Very interesting....and I really don't like checkering. It is a necassary evil, so I do it.

Haven't to date seen a machine get close to the human hand. I think that appears to be changeing?

Thanks for answering me back.

Fish scale and some of the other like patterns are really very old. I've seen similar on original Yeager rifles.. The methodology is fairly simple, the frame work is spaced out and the 'scales' are formed with a series of shaped punches. They supply the curves and any textures. The truly difficult checkering is the floral carved checkering mainly found in european weapons..

So that is the trick. A 2 step process.  Somebody was thinking.... now I wonder how much that can be applied to carving low relief scenes. My biggest problem with machines was the lack of changing depth. Gave the scene a very flat look. This might.

Just need a 28 hr day to get to all this interesting stuff!

Thanks,
Chris

Big Bore,

I have been wondering if you are ready to sell that nice rifle yet?  ;D

I want to try ordering one of those stocks from AI for my .243. I am hoping to have one by deer season next fall. Any ideas where I can find a myrtle blank?
