Med. Weight Varmint rifle
« on: January 16, 2006, 02:54:27 PM »
I am looking for a medium wieght varmint rifle.  I want something accurate that won't overheat in 3 rounds, that weighs around 8 pounds.  I don't want one of those 10 pound rifles because once I have my scope and bipod on, they will be too heavy for my style of coyote hunting.

I already decided I want a 223 Rem., and the rifle will be used mostly on coyotes and woodchucks.  I was just curious if anyone has any suggestions or experience in this area.

Thanks

Take a look at the Remington 700 light weight varmint stainless fluted. I think it's called LWSF in the product line. Sounds like what you're looking for.

I would have to recommend the CZ 527 Varmint.  I have the varmint laminated, and with Black Hills 55 gr. V max ammo, it has no problem shooting 1/2" groups at 100 yards.  It has a semi bull barrel so you can shoot quite a bit before it overheats, and weighs almost exactly what you want.  The laminated weighs in at 7.9 lbs, according to their website and the other varming models weigh slightly less.

I also really like Tikka rifles, but when I handled their varmint model, the stock seemed light and with a bull barrel and it felt extremely barrel heavy to me.  It is for this reason that I decided on the CZ.

What ever you get, I don't think overheating should be a problem on coyotes and woodchucks. You got that many around you need more rifles.

In the past I've been a big Remington fan, mostly because early on I used several model 788's and model 600's. They were accutate beyond belief. I've never got great results from Rugers but have always liked them, Remington much more accurate. If you find a Sako L461 or the old Harrington Richardson on the L461 action, you'll have as good as it gets.

Today I have several Model 700's and love the older one's. Haven't had much luck with the newer one's. But the round action is easy to bed and Remington has to have the easiest trigger to work on. Just bought a Winchester featherweight and can't say much yet other than it's beautiful and feel's great in my hands. Time will tell.

I like those Remington rifles also and have one Sako that lines the bullet on top of each other. They don't seem to make those Rems like they used to from what I've heard. Mine shoot fine no problems. :D

Take a look at the Winchester Coyote Light. It weighs in at 7.5 lbs with a 24" fluted barrel. It's a sharp looking rifle. I have put it on my want list :D

I also would reccomend the CZ 527 Varmint in 223. I have one and it is an excellent rifle. The best trigger, a lot of times good figured walnut and all metal floor plate and trigger guard.

If I NEEDED a new coyote gun I would go with the Remington 700 light varmint as well. It was designed for just what you want it for. As for the new winchester light coyote, I can't get past the holes in the stock. Looks like something out of star wars.

I've got a Remington 700 Light Varmint Stainless Fluted, LVSF, in 22-250. It weighs in at 6 3/4 lbs from the factory. It is available in 223 too. It handles nicely, is easy to carry and shoots very well. MI VHNTR

the remingtons shoot very well. I will also recommend a Browning Stalker or Hunter model.

They are every bit as nice as the remingtons and just a different "flavor" and fit.

one of those two brands always seems to match what i need when i go gun shopping.

Hi All,

Just got the Rem 700 light varmint, stainless, fluted in .223.  All I did with it was install a timney trigger, though I'm ordering a firing pin shroud assembly from Brownells to replace that aweful j-lock abomination.  I mounted a leupold vari-x II 6x18 target dot scope.  Whata rig!!!  I'm very happy.

I traded a rem 700 VLS in 243 for it.  Too damn heavy for me!

Couldn't be happier!

You ought to see my little vixen ( no scratchs or dings on it ) Bought it when they first came out, Yes have had all the above at one time or another and loved every one of them. I do have one of the Sako actioned Marlins with the micro groove barrel that is an absolute tack driver ( bought it in 1954 ) and it still puts em in there. Thank for the reply

Hey Bee,

The 700LSFS is brand new.  It had that stupid lock...though...not for long.

BTW, I had it out on Sat and shot some gvmt surplus that I have so much of, I think it's lake City XM193ball with the 55gr boattail bullet.  My loading room is under renovation.  Shot 3/4" groups over and over.  This dog can shoot!

I think the CZ might be the best of what's available to us at the moment.  The older Sakos were sweet also but are pretty heavy now.  Most of todays varmint rifles are running at about 10lbs., just too heavy to lug around.  The day is rapidly approaching when if you want a good 8.5lb. varmint rifle you'll need a good gunsmith to make you one.  Just one mans opinion.  Best wishes.
