Mossberg ATR range report
« on: January 16, 2006, 03:00:58 AM »
Yesterday I sighted in my new Mossberg ATR in 30-06 with a Tasco 4x12 40mm scope attached.
Benchresting at 100 yds the accuracy is decent for a out of box hunting rifle. But it seems to be finicky on the ammo used. The Remington Core Loks 150 gr was around 3" grouping. Switching to Winchester Silver Tips in 150 gr the group dropped to less than 2". With Federal 180 gr the grouping was about the same but with a 1" drop. I didn't have any 165-170 gr to try but I have read that this weight range gives the best accuracy in this rifle.
My Dad will do some reloading for me to see which particular bullets do the best. The Sierra Game King in 150, 165 and 180 gr and between SPBT and SPFB.
Overall the rifle functioned fine, no FTF or extractions. The rifle is very comfortable to shoot especially for me since I’m left handed. Will need to work on the trigger some, it's a little rough and some creep.
