Mossberg ATR range report
« on: January 16, 2006, 02:44:00 AM »
Yesterday I went to my private range to sight in the ATR in 30-06 with a Tasco MAG 4x12 40mm scope attached.
Bench shooting at 100 yards the rifle has good hunting accuracy. But, seems to be real finicky on the types of ammo used. I started with Remington 150gr Cor Loks and best I ecould get was around 3" group at 100 yds. Switching to Winchester Silver Tips in 150 gr the group dropped to less than 2". Also the same with Federal 180 gr soft points. I didn't have any 165-170 gr bullets to try. But from what I have read the best accuracy is in this weight range.
My Dad is going to do some reloading for me with three different bullets, SPBT and SPFB in 150gr and SPFB in 180gr (all Sierra Game Kings) and see which shows the best accuracy in this barrel. Will also pickup some Game Kings in 165gr when I have time.
The rifle did great, no FTF or extracting problems. But I will need to work on the trigger some. A little to much creep for me and a little rough. Also comfortable to shoot, even bench resting. I usually hate bench resting bolt actions, since I'm left handed shooting a right handed rifle.
