Need some help!!
« on: January 12, 2006, 06:23:20 PM »
I am looking for a long range deer/barbary sheep and elk gun. Thinking about a 7mm ultra mag. I already have a 7mm rem mag. and just want another gun in my collection. I just like the info on the ultra and wondered if you guys have anything to say.

I wonder why you'd want another 7mm gun...(this is coming from a person that owns three 300 Savages).  If you're looking to reload and already have a bunch of different bullets in various weights then it would be a good choice.

You stated that you have a 7 MM Mag, not going to gain much over that with this, around 200-300 ft/sec.  If you had a 7mm-08 then I might see a reason.

Ammo is going to be harder to find if you don't role your own and expensive.  Don't know what other guns you have but if you wanted to jump up to a larger caliber maybe a 300 Ultra or a 338 Ultra.  Granted a 7mm Rem. Mag will dump anything those will with the correct bullet.

Just a thought...

My wife once made the mistake of telling me "all of your guns look alike"...No, I've had this gun for a long time! LOL

There really is nothing wrong with the 338 but i have friends that have one and I really gotta get something different, though depending on availability i may make a different selection.

I use a 175 grain soft point boattail with 60.9 gr IMR 4350. in the 7mm rem mag. And I do have several bullets to chose from. I have sonsidered the 338 ultra among others and for some reason the 7mm ultra just stands out.

If you go ahead and ask most PH, they will tell you that the extra speed that the RUM don't offer you any real knock-down power.  And that just the standard magnums can give you 90% of the balistics that the RUM give.  However you need to keep in mind that extra fast bullets, tend to cause "some" bullet failures and thats something that all hunters hate to have...

check this out:

here is the taylor KO value for 300 win mag using 180 grain
.3 * 180 * 2960 / 7000 = 23.8

here is the taylor KO value for 300 RUM using 180 grain
.3 * 180 * 3250 / 7000 = 25

As you can see, the difference in knock down power of the faster bullet is almost too small to even be noticed.

If I was you, I'd get a long range round that some some REAL knock-down power, something like a 338 win mag or even a 375 h&h (with lighter bullets for the long distances)

I'll leave KNOCKDOWN POWER to the boys in HOLLYWOOD.
Higher velocity = flatter trajectory.... maybe not always needed, but  that's what makes long range cartridges.... well..... long range.

I really like the 300 ultra mag, just the best trajectory, and that is what you need for sheep and goat.  The 300 RUM or the 300 weatherby is what I would go for.  Well, for me, the 300 RUM, but I would also recommend the 300WTBY
