You mean the Taurus UltraLite compared to the S&W model 329pd Scandium? The Taurus is a couple ounces heavier and made from a Titanium alloy, and the quality may be hit or miss.
The S&W is comprised of a Scandium Frame, Stainless Steel Barrel, and Titanium Cylinder. Quality is likely top notch.

I have one, and it has a barrel alignment broblem... I've heard of it happening before with the same gun.  Other than that its a good pistol, smooth action, shoots well.  When going to buy it, get a small flashlight, and make sure that the cylinder lines up with the barrel, if not, don't buy it.  If you find a good one, I would recommend it.  I have a friend who has a S&W scandium in the .357 mag, and that is just a sweet pistol, everything is top of the line on it.  If you don't mind spending the money, I would go with the smith.  You won't be let down one the taurus, as long as you check to make sure it's aligned correctly, and the cylinder slides out and in smoothly (another problem I've heard of)  These problems seem to be one gun specific, and not with every one.

And more problems with use...  I was out shooting, and the gun probably has about 200-250 rounds through it or so, and noticed that it was starting the get hard to pull the hammer back, especially at the end of the stroke.  When I got home, I pulled it apart, and noticed lots of metal scraping going on.  I had to get out the sand paper and go to town on about six different places that were rubbing.  It fixed the problem.... for now.  I also had to sand the rods inside both springs, and lube them good, they were also rubbing.  After this hour or so of work, it seems to be working like new again....  but we will see how that lasts.  So my recommendation is slowly moving more towards the smith.

Gets better every time i shoot :-D   So the firing pin washer (there is an actual seperate piece which slips in to hold the firing pin spring)  Would come out if dry fired repeatedly 3 times.  Took to it with a little JB weld, see how that holds up, seems to be doing good so far on the dry fire.  There is also a little plate which the hammer spring pin rides through, and it will slip out of place, therefor making cocking hard.  Just put it back in place...  hit it with a screwdriving a couple of times to try and wedge it better.  Pretty soon I'm gonna have  a $500 paperweight... And being titanium, it might not even be good for that!!! :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D

My brother and I each bought one last fall for a bow elk hunt in CO. Very light and easy to carry/pack. The gun does kick with full 44 mag loads. Both our pistols shot high and mine had 2 cylander notches that were milled to wide leaving alot of play in the gun. I sent it back to Taurus and got it back a month and a half later. They send a test target and apparently fixed the point of aim, but didn't do anything about the timing. Customer service lady said I could send it back if I wanted, but if the gun shot and functioned, they would not do anything about it. She wouldn't even look up my file or let me talk with anyone who knew anything. I was not too happy and will be getting through to someone who can deal with this soon. Overall it seems to be a nice gun, but this may just be the last Taurus I buy if they don't fix the issue.

I deal with all these problems myself...  I've heard enough horror stories about Taurus customer service that I would rather not deal with them.

It's kind of hard to fix a cylendar that's notched too wide, at least for me.  I have yet to take time to deal w/ Taurus on this issue.  I will get through to someone besides a customer service lady and hopefully get it straightened out.  I have yet to shoot the gun since I got it back.

I have one and it has been perfect so far. I bought this gun to carry a lot and shoot a little. I shoot 44 Special loads in it until I really need the extra power. Its a joy to carry and shoots sweet as hell with the 44 specials.
shot placement is everything.

Just an update on my Ultralite. I have had it to the range five or six times and every time I take it out, I like it even better. It functions perfectly and shoots well with everything I have tried in it. It likes the 300 Grain Cast Performance WFNGC bullet at arouns 1000 fps. It also shoots well with the Blazer 200 Grain Speer HP 44 Special ammo. I am very happy with this gun.
