CZ550 FS in 6.5x55
« on: January 10, 2006, 07:37:48 PM »
Guys,

Just ran across a CZ550 Mannlicher in 6.5x55. The rifle feels like it fits pretty well and I'm kind of partial to the mannlicher stock. The bolt seems to bind a little, but I'm sure that will give over a while.

Since I've never shot a Mannlicher in this caliber - what am I to expect as far as muzzle blast and velocity loss? I imagine around 150fps or so? The rifle has a 21" barrel, so it's not as short as the Ruger Mannlichers at 18" for example. I know the Swede prefers a longer barrel - the longer the better, but 21" seems to be a good compromise. Actual Steyr-Mannlicher versions come with a 20" barrel so 21" may not be that bad.

What do you guys think? Any thoughts or input on the CZ550FS appreciated.

Regards

Hi There,

Sorry cannot help on the 550 as I don't have one. But the barrel length is a Non-problem, just use a slightly faster powder for reloading although I have not noticed any problems using 4350 powder in a 22" barrel and another 1" shorter is not going to notice much at all. Heck I don't have problems with a BSA .270W which has a 20" barrel.

You just have to decide on what bullets weights you want to use and try them. Mine likes a range of bullet weights, it's a sporterised Military M96 or M38 or some such rifle. The action was mae by Carl Gustav about 1905 and it was sporterised by soem company in the US I was told. I brought it newly done and it has the stepped military barrel on it. I assum from a corbine or something because it's only 22" long. I have tried bullet weights from 77 grains to 160 grains. The Speer 120 Grn bullets work well in it. Oh the 77 grn was Norma Factory loads.

I have a 550 Full Stock in a 9.9x62 and I noticed the same thing.  However it doesn't do it when there are cartridges in the magazine just when I am running the bolt with the magazine empty.  For me it is a none problem.   By the way is this one beautiful weapon or what???  Buckfever
