308 in a long action?
« on: January 06, 2006, 07:04:41 PM »
So I got a M70 for real cheap.  New in box for $225.  It is in 270 Win.  I was going to sell it, but got to thinking that I could build a long range gun with this action.  Looking on the internet I see that you can buy match grade 270 barrels.  This appeals to me just out of uniqueness, but I read a statement on rec.guns about using a long action for a 308 as it would be easier to load single shots.

What would you do with a new M70?  I figure that I could spend another $500 this year.   What does rebarrelling cost a good gunsmith?  I am leaning toward buying a good stock and some 270 dies ASAP and then using the action with a new barrel down the road.....maybe the factory rifle is a shooter.

Don't have any Winchester experience (I have some Remingtons).  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I would check out the 270 first and see how it shot. Rebarreling can be a pretty expensive proposition. A good match barrel and getting it blued and fitted you are looking at about $500.00 if not more. :D

One question ... Why?

Are you really going to gain anything with an extra 1/2 to 1 inch of room in the action for single-shot loading?

If you are shooting prone or at the bench I think that it would be easier loading into the long action.

Just kind of thinking out loud.  The new barrel wouldn't have to be a 308.  A 25-06 or .280 would be interesting too.  I figure that getting an action this cheap is a pretty rare thing and I want to make good use of it.

Whatever I choose to do I will have to spend money:  new dies and 277 bullets, new dies and a new stock, new barrel and new stock, whatever the choice is... it will cost money.  I just want some other perspectives on it.
