Will the recent flooding in some western areas improve the chances for panning and sluicing this spring?

you bet! the more the better! but not so good for calif homes being flooded
this will be a good season for prospecting.

Yes, placer streams renew themselves to some degree in a few years if the mother lode wasn't completely mined out. When the rains hit Calif. a few years ago a mini gold rush started over again.

Wish I was there, just glacial streams here and cold, cold waters.

Dave the water is cold here in No. Calif. also. Was out last week and gave up cause of the ICE in the water. Lucky I'am away from all the flooding and so forth. Where I normally go the river took out part of the road in a narrow spot of the road. Son in law and another guy took a cat and back hoe (with a clamshell bucket) and did some patching.It was a case they had to as he lives on the other side of it. Think will wait till after spring run off before I venture into the river to pan.

It's best to wait until the water has dropped. Placer gold will generally follow the 'gut' or middle of the river and be deposited just past the inside bends where the water slows down. Be the first one there when the water is low and get the material off the bedrock that had been under water and you should see some color.
