Thinking about a 45acp tracker for a trail gun.
« on: January 01, 2006, 09:59:59 AM »
I've been thinking long and hard on the 45acp tracker mostly for my wife to use when she's out walking in the woods with the kids and the dog, for possible mt. lion protection, ferrel dogs, or ferrel two leggers, and home defense.

My wife does well with my 45 colt Redhawk and cowboy loads but that's alot to pack, have had semi-auto's but she feels much more comfortable with revolvers.

How is this revolver for recoil/controllability, and accuracy. or would she be better off with a similar gun in 38special/357mag instead of 45 acp.

Thanks.

I've been thinking of one of these .45 ACP Trackers myself... I like the fact that it is stainless steel.  But it's a toss up between the .44 Mag Tracker and the .45 ACP Tracker.  8)

Either one will get the job done very nicely.

I was going to recommend getting a Tracker in .45 (long) Colt but I see that Taurus no longer offers one.

I own one of those .45 ACP Trackers and it has become my favorite side arm in the field.  I shoot 200 gr swc and recoil is much less than a 357 mag.  The porting in the barrel also helps and really doesn't add too much to the noise level.  If you go for this handgun make sure you order extra stellar clips; they are pretty easy to lose track of.

I like the 38/357, becaue the .38 has enough power to handle what you are talking about (especially with all the +P rounds they are making now, without beating up on your wife's hands, then you have the option of extra power from the .357 if ever necessary.

You may also want to look at the Tracker in 41 mag , No half moon clips and a little more punch than the 357 .

Still a very nice trail gun .

Well, I took the wife to a couple of shops to look around, had her handle a S&W Lady Smith, 686, and an older model 19, and an sp 101, and also found a good used tracker in 45 colt with a 4" barrel for $319 but she liked the idea of the stellar clips and wanted to go with the 45ACP, and liked the feel of the tracker the best so we ordered one from Davidson's and picked it up yesterday.  I checked it over close and it's a nice solid little revolver. We're both itching to try it out.

The same shop also has another 6" in 45 colt for $339. I may have to pick it up if this one proves to be alright.

Thanks for all the input. :D

I have one of the Titanium Trackers in 45 ACP. Due to its light weight it has pretty snappy recoil with 230 hardball. If you are a fan of the 45ACP (As I am), go for it. It would do the job, and is a real joy to carry. If you are flexable on caliber, I too would suggeat the 357. Then you have a wide choise of 38s, 38 +ps, and 357 loads. Most important thing is to get her to become aquainted with whatever she depends on.

I own a .45 Colt Tracker and it has proven to be very accurate with the right combination of lead bullets.  One inch groups are possible setting with a rest.

I'm old so I have to set and rest when I shoot.  :-)

Tracker work bottom two targets, one on right is poor warm up work on new loads...left is one inch group.

Note:  Though the target is 50 yard small bore, these holes were punched at 15 yards.

What did you decide to do? Have you picked up a Tracker? If  so, how do you like it?

mt3030,

I picked up the tracker back in January,(see my post Jan 17th) So far it's been a nice little revolver, We've only ran some Winchester 230's through it and some 200gr swc reloads but accuracy has been very acceptable, We haven't had much time to really wring it out, and the recoil is kinda stiff but my wife seems to really enjoy this little pistol. The fit and finish are very good for the price.

We're working on clearing some land for a house and right after we got it I wore it on my hip in an uncle mikes holster while cutting and clearing to see what it would be like comfortwise for carry and pretty much forgot it was even there.  It'll make a great little trail gun.

Thanks for the advice
