If WalMart has it in stock you're OK but many have had some issues when ordering a gun from them.  Just keep that in mind.  WalMart abandoned CA after underselling everyone esle.  Just glad they didn't put any shops out of business before they did, or else we'd have nothing here.

I think you might be a little unclear about what CA's anti gun Attorney General had in store for WalMart. I'd be more inclined to say they were driven from the market, than that they abandoned it.

I don't see what is wrong with "underselling" someone.  WalMart buys a LOT of guns at a time, so what?  Everyone complains about WalMart underselling the "little man".  The "little man" needs to provide a service that WalMart cannot:  knowledge and experience.  If you want to gripe about WalMart then gripe about them committing to buy 10000 units of an item and then holding the contract over the manufacturer's head to get a better price.  Once vendors get in bed with WalMart they might regret it.   As to the "underselling"....too bad.

As to the Stevens 200 in .223, Sports South, WalMart's Savage supplier has been out of stock for at least 2 months.  I have been waiting since November.

I picked up a Stevens Model 200 in .223 a couple days before Christmas at Sportsmans Warehouse for $259.99. With it I also picked up Warne Rings and Bases, and Butler Creek Flip Open Scope Lense Covers (for the 3x9x40mm Nikon Buckmaster I bought from a friend). All totalled I have $425.00 in this Stevens Model 200 in .223 including scope, mounts and covers.

As was stated the mold lines are visible in the stock, but that is cosmetic not functional. The molded in Aluminum Pillars on my stock could have been a little longer the way it looks as they do not extend to the top of the "Plastic". The Forend is indeed Free Floated as advertised. The only thing I have found so far that may need a little attention is when the stock screws are tightened I can feel the Barreled Action pull down into the stock, and this Rifle may or may not need to be bedded in the future.

Upon getting the Rifle ready to shoot I found instructions on another site on how to tune the old style Savage Trigger (which is what the Stevens uses). This was fairly simple and straight forward,, and was quite easy to do if the instructions were followed. The whole thing took about 20 minutes once I found the little E Clip I lost when disassembling the trigger. The end result was a super crisp 2 3/4 pound trigger. (I did not set the Trigger Pull Weight Screw any lighter than this for now, and may or may not lighten it up slightly after I get a couple hundred rounds throug this rifle).

After thoroughly cleaning the bore I headed to the range with some Ultra Max Commercial Reloads with 55gr. Winchester Pointed Soft Point Bullets. I zeroed the rifle initially at 30 yards, and once satisfied it was zeroed I moved back to 100 yards. The first 2 rounds fired at 100 yards were seperated by less than a half a bullet hole. However I should not have looked through the spotting scope as I must have got excited and pulled the 3rd shot. Yep knew it when the gun went off. At any rate I put the next 2 rounds between the first 3 and ended up with the first 5 shots at 100 yards going into 1". I shot another 5 - 5 shot groups at 100 yards that day, and the first was the largest, and the smallest was 5/8". I was quite pleased.

So far I have fired about 100 rounds through this Rifle and have not changed my mind yet. I think for the $$$ this is a hell of a rifle.

Larry

PS, yes for the record it does have a 1 in 9" Rifling Twist.

This thread is interesting!  I was spending all my time in the NEF forum figuring out if I wanted to purchase a Handi!  I show up here and everyone is selling their Handi for a Savage....except Bladerunner who bought a Tikka and has posted on every forum about the Tikka.

I bought the Stevens in .223 and I like it, I haven't gotten enough range time with it though.  Need to find some better ammo I think.  All of the facts & stats (calibers, twist, length, etc.) can be found on savages web site...the subjective stuff is where the forums help!  :)

I just want Savage to put out the stevens in 204.  I'm not holding my breath. I was going to get the Handi in 204...but I got more nervous the more I read. That's why I love these forums!

:-D  Considering I just saw Bladerunner pushing the savage in another thread!!!  :)
Although he later admitted "I would (and did) buy a Tikka.....I just figgured if i kept putting this into EVERY rifle recommendation post, somebody everybody would get sick of seein' my posts"

lol

All jest aside, I'm seriously looking at the Savage. The Tikka is a nice rifle, however, I want a rifle made in the USA....  So I'll probably go Savage in .25-06 for myself, and possibly in .243 for my wife. I have yet to hear a discouraging word about that rifle in that cartridge... other than the "ugly rifle" hypothesis... Other than the infamous barrel nut, I think they look everybit as good as the remingtons. I've also heard that the stocks from the savage 110 will fit the "entry level" stevens 200. I suppose you might find a take off fairly cheap from a gunsmith or custom rifle/stock builder.
