Weatherby Vanguard on closeout sale
« on: December 27, 2005, 02:22:22 PM »
I've been looking at this Vanguard stainless/synthetic in .270 at a local discount store. They are asking $400 for it. Only thing that worries me is the synthetic stock fits tight against the barrel rather than free floating. Is that typical? This rifle has been on the store rack a long time so is pre MOA. I'm tempted to gamble on it being a shooter. Suggestions? Comments?

That's a good price for it.

Weatherby rifles in general are not free floated, so don't necessarily worry about it.

You are correct.  Given that it is pre-MOA, there is a better chance that it may be a shooter, but that is not 100%.  However, you may want to take a look at the test target that comes with the gun.

If I was in your area, I would buy one for $400 no questions asked.

I wouldn't worry about the stock touching the barrel...It is an extremely easy procedure to free float a rifle with a Synthetic Stock. My new Winchester Model 70 isn't free floated and with 8 shots through it is shooting 1/2 groups at 100. I understand your concern, cause I am a free float nut, it bugs so bad when there is something touching my barrel.
I haven't floated my Model 70. But it sooooooo gets under my skin that it shoots so good with the barrel touching the stock.
I say buy it.

Thanks for the advice! I went back in today and asked to see the test target. They had to go back to the stockroom to get the shipping box but finally found it and brought it out. The target had two shots cutting one elongated hole. The third round was a bit off to the right. My ruler measured 5/8" extreme spread for the group. Considering it was shot using factory ammo, good enough for me. The rifle would have easily made the Vanguard MOA cutoff. The store had reduced all centerfire rifles in stock by $20 so my price was $380, not bad for a stainless steel rifle.

I bought a .270 Vanguard, beautiful fancy satin walnut, 20 years ago.
It has performed with flawless excellence. Just a terrific deer rifle!
