New cannon video
« on: December 27, 2005, 03:21:41 AM »
Hi All,
I've uploaded a couple of new cannon videos
http://www.jacsport.com/cannons_and_other_stuff.htm
I kept them fairly small, so it should be possible to load them with dialup.
Both videos are in slow motion. For some reason I just can't resist doing it that way as the effect seems to "scale up" the cannon and mortar.
The mortar is a one inch bore and for ammo I used a 1" long piece of round aluminum bar stock. I know mortar balls are supposed to be round, but it was just so easy to part off some round bar. Has anyone else experimented with aluminum and / or cylindrical shot?

Depends if you count beer cans as cylindrical.  I have done pressure testing using cylindrical shot as it is easier to make extra heavy ones that way.

Should have loaded the cannon with grape shot for the computer.

What is that white stuff?  Did you spread some kind of fireproofing around before you fired the cannons? :)

Thanks, fun videos!

The white stuff is sound deadening. Muffles the sound of gunfire... When the temperature drops to -20C the cannon produces quite a different sound compared to warmer days (a much sharper crack).
Oops, I'd better convert celsius to the Confederate temp scale : 4 below :)
