Bullet starter rod combo
« on: December 21, 2005, 06:32:00 AM »
I made a bullet starter rod combo that works real well with the Huntsman. Went to the local farm store and got a 3/8 fiber glass fence post(the ones used for electric fence) a 3/4" threaded plastic pipe cap and a 1/2" x3/4" threaded plastic pipe adapter. I cut the post to 8" long and fitted 2 38specials or 357mag will work also with epoxey to the ends. The rod will have to be milled down so the cases will fit over the rod, I used a dremel tool with a sander disc. I leave the fired primer in one case and remove the other one. Then I use a 1/4" bit and drill the pocket out and a smaller bit at the end. Then I used my case schamfer tool to finish the taper and smooth up the cuts between the 2 bit sizes. I cut the 1/2" threaded end off the adapter and found a old spark plug boot that fit inside of the adapter. The boot will have to be cut to length to fit inside the adapter. My boot was bigger in diameter than the inside of the adapter, so ground it down to fit. Fit the boot inside the adapter and screw the cap on the adapter. The cap should now fit on either end of the rod just like a spark plug boot fits on a plug. Now the rod will work on pointed bullets or flat ones. I start the bullet with the starter and pop the cap off the rod and finish pushing it down with the factory rod. The rod doesn't have to be extended. When you break the gun open to put the primer on the rod falls out of the barrel or just dump it out. Total cost was less the $5.  and the rest of the fence post can be made into a range rod doing the same as the short rod.  If I knew how to post a picture I would!!  Zeak
