Got my 'stocking stuffer' from Kap!
« on: December 19, 2005, 12:10:49 PM »
The little mortar from kappullen was just delivered.

It's a really nice barrel, the photos he posted do not do it justice. And it's a complete kit with base, caps, and handles. Sweet!

Too bad I won't get to play with it tonight, I have to go to our company Christmas party.

I'll try to get it together and finished over the next few nights so I can show it off this weekend. As soon as I have it 'presentable' I'll post some pics.

Thanks Kap!!!

It was late last night when I finally settled down, and I didn't have time to get any real work done.

I did manage to do the layout for how I want the holes. I'm going to use stainless steel screws (that I bought at Lowe's) for now, until I can rig something a little more authentic, #4 x3/8" in the handles and #6 x 1/2" in the caps.

Tropico, I can send you a larger version of this file with some dimensions if you want. I didn't put dimensions on it last night because I'm going to print it at actual size, on sticky paper.

I have a small piece of brass left over from another project, so I want to make a vent shield (or whatever it is properly called) for the mortar bed. First I'm going to have to find some photos to study to see how it should look.

The drawings look good Terry.  FWIW the screws in the coehorn "aren't".  The are bolts and go all the way through the base.

By the way if you make a double post all you have to is look in the upper right hand corner of your post and you will see an X. Click on it and you can delete the double post.

Yeah, I know. The screws will have to do until I can put together some more appropriate hardware. For now I just want to get it together before Christmas.

The screws in the sides are intended to 'simulate' (sorta) the ends of the tiebolts, that's why the extra screws above the handles where another tiebolt would be.

Later I can drill through the existing holes, to install something more realistic.

Besides, I can always just blame the computer. It's what has made me the lazy bum I am today. :?

Here is a 'dry fit' of all the parts. I haven't done any sanding yet, I wanted to get the holes drilled first:

Once it's finish I will post better photos, including the requisite 'powder can' shot.

Tropico, if you right click and save this image, then print it without letting Windows resize it, you should be able to cut out the templates and use them to transfer the hole centers to the block.

This is, of course, assuming that our blocks are the same size.

Also, you should lay the hardware out on the templates to make sure the holes line up with the marks before drilling. Can never be too careful.

If you have problems, send me a PM.

After a generous sanding with 100, and then 150 grit, I applied two coats of hot, thinned tung oil to seal the wood.

The finish really doesn't show in the pictures because it has almost no gloss (the way I like it), but the wood is smooth as silk:

And of course the requisite powder can:

While I had the barrel off, I closed off the vent with a piece of fuse and filled the chamber to the top, as near as I could tell, with Goex FFFg. The charge weighed 2.9 grains on my digital scale.  The chamber might have held a smidgen more, but I kept overfilling it and having to dump it it and try again.

The smallest dipper in my Lee set is .3cc. The chart says that it should throw 4.8 grains of FFFg, but weighed on my scale it only averages about 4.1 and that overfills the chamber. I'm going to try to make a copper dipper that throws a consistent 3 grains.
