Paint is traditional.

But then, there are a few chunks of fine wood that shout out "presentation model"!

I agree, especially if it isn't an exact repro or going to be used in re-enactments. If its an exact mosel of the real thing, the real paint probably is the best - even though it pains me to paint a pretty piece of hardwood.

I have seen some beautiful natural wood carriages especially with brass trim and hardware.   I have seen a couple with black hardware that don't look too bad.

But for the most part the natural wood carriages don't look right to me with natural wood finish even with the fanciest of figured wood. They just look incomplete and unfinished to my eye.

The Gun in my avatar is a good example.  It has always seemd wrong to me. Now that I finally learned the correct color after 20 years it will get finished in the correct color..

There is a hard and fast rule about how to finish your carriage,  Each to his own and do what pleases you.

H mmm...... i see yer point ...looking through the cannon  pics around the forum , some side by side natural- painted ..finishes ...the painted seems to say..... tradition , nestalga, heritage , history ........come to think of it the only reason im considering a natural finish is because its easyer ..les labor intensive .....ie..primer and finish cote ...etc ....but whats the hurry ? .... i need to enjoy the journey  !! ... yes

I prefer the looks of a painted carriage.  I feel it is more appropriate for larger scale models and full scale pieces.  For small guns a blued or polished finish looks great.

Painted guns belong on the field being fired.  Guns with a natural finish belong on the mantle.
