I kind of know what you mean, but if you got a good smith to do it correctly, you haven't destroyed anything, you have just turned a fixed comp into a removeable comp on the shroud in question and you also have the comp to then mount on the other barrels.  In a worst case scenario, you still have an uncomped barrel to use.  I am leaning this direction, although I already have a large piece of aluminum bar stock from which  to machine a comp.  I may try it both ways if I can find a good deal on a comped shroud one of these days.
Anyway, I'll keep you posted if I make any progress.
