Can someone measure the exit hole in the comp. for a 44 or 445, I am trying to get a bolt on one made.

Dave,
Mine are not here where I can measure them, but the DW compensator opens into a large diameter bore (just a little over the outside diameter of a barrel nut) just after the muzzle exit of the actual barrel, then an exterior cap screws into the comp and the hole in the cap is just a little over bore diameter (just guessing I would say about 45 caliber on a 44). Which hole do you need the diameter for?

Just the exit hole I have the inside of the comp. the outside diameter of the barrel nut, to work I will have to weld two barrel nuts together this will hold the comp, strait with the barrel. Then a bolt will need to be drilled and tapped at the barrel underlug, similar to what the S&W 500 looks like, I am willing to share if it works, It will be cheaper to have it machined if I order more than one. Will only work with the VH barrel

If it works David, I would certainly be willing to consider buying a few. I have assembled the materials to do the same thing myself, I just never had time to do it. Screw 2 barrel nuts onto the same barrel to keep them aligned, weld them together, then machine a comp to slide over and bolt up. It should work. I have also thought about making a cylindrical one like the S&W performance center puts on their custom guns.

At any rate, keep us informed on your project, I would certainly be interested.

Hey Dave,
Here is an Idea to consider.

On my 357 mag. I bought a compensator that replaces the barrel nut and it is 1.52 inches long and 0.67 inches in diameter with an exit hole of 0.387 inches. It has round holes in a three two pattern around it and the holes are 0.176 inches in diameter. I wouldn't take much to scale it up to the 445.

What I did with it was to clamp a piece of copper tubing on the bottom of it so the bottom holes are closed off so only the top holes are exposed.

I can shoot full power magnum loads though it and it feels like 38s

I would show you a picture but I need to find my electronic camera.
If you can imagine taking the barrel nut off of your 445 and replacing it with an inch and 3/4 long nut with round holes all around it.

Sorry this took so long, but according to my digital caliper, the exit hole on the comp nut measures somewhere between .438 and .440. Let me know how your attempt on the comp comes along. I will let you know if I get a prototype made.

ZZTOP's idea seems workable also.

Hope the measurement is what you need.

Yes, and keep posting here about your progress. It is funny but I was thinking the same thing since I got my DW44. My idea was to create a "Barrel Nut" that would replace the one we use now. It would be about 1 or 2 inches and work like a compensator with holes cut into it. Seems like there might be a couple of guys around here willing to pay you for one if it works. Please keep us informed. Pictures would be great too!

This may be stupid. Did you call Brian a DW and check with him. They do comp. barrels still. I don't completely understand, but they use a longer shroud than barrel. Anyway, I'm sure he could,but may not, tell you. I need a barrel tool. My buddy is always lookng for a machine shop project. Instead of two nuts, why not steel pipe threaded or cold rolled milled and threaded? :idea2:

They do not make a 10"comp barrel, I have talked to the last two companies and they tell me that since the barrels are cut with a cnc they can not or will not make a 10" comp barrel. I have been told that they think the weight of a 10" VH barrel is sufficient to suppress the recoil, so no I am on a mission to make my own or have one made.

I hear ya. I was told by Brian, I talk like I really know him, that they put a 10" on an 8" barrel and call it an 8" supressed barrel. I'm not sure?. If you build something like this, I could use it on my 8. I'm just not sure, I kinda like the WHACK! :twisted:

Seeing all those comp barrels on ebay made me think about just cutting a comp off the front of a DW comp barrel then you could mount it on the same shround or mount it on any other VH shroud, probably cheaper than having one machined. Of course you would have to machine the face of the cut, but that probably could be done by any good smith.

Rolltide yeah I have had that idea also, I have been keeping my eye out for a 4"comp but I would still have trouble cutting up a perfectly good barrel :cry:

I kind of know what you mean, but if you got a good smith to do it correctly, you haven't destroyed anything, you have just turned a fixed comp into a removeable comp on the shroud in question and you also have the comp to then mount on the other barrels. In a worst case scenario, you still have an uncomped barrel to use. I am leaning this direction, although I already have a large piece of aluminum bar stock from which to machine a comp. I may try it both ways if I can find a good deal on a comped shroud one of these days.

Anyway, I'll keep you posted if I make any progress.

I was talking with my brother (a gun smith) last night and he thinks he can make one for my 44. (He loves it when I give him a challenge). Our idea is to buy a premade rifle muzzlebrake, Machine it to the correct bore size, then thread it to the correct thread on the end of the barrel. We are thinking about using it as a replacement for a barrel nut. This way, I SHOULD be able to use it on any of my barrels. I am thinking that the 8" with the brake installed would be really long. But a 6" with the brake might be just right!

If Rolltide doesn't mind sharing, I will be happy to let everyone know how it works out. Otherwise I can start a different thread.

Hey Guys,
Well I talked with my brother last night about how it was going with my Muzzlebrake. He said that he called the die place that was looking into making him a die for the threads. They told him it would be very costly unless he wanted 50 dies or so. I told him I understand. He also mentioned that the debris that would fly from the brake (powder and crap) would be getting pretty close to me in a shorter barrel. Good Point.

He is still going to make me one though. He is going to cut back the Barrel shroud of my 8" one and re-thread the barrel and Brake. That way the 8 just became my dedicated Hunting Barrel. I have a 6 and 4 barrels so I can use one of those for plinking at the range if I want to. I will post some pictures once I get it and let you guys tell me what you think.

Thanks Robb. I am really looking forward to seeing what you come up with. A gunsmith and I once had the discussion about special dies for another project I was working on. Another gunsmith was able to use his lathe to cut the threads, no dies needed. Another idea you might want to consider is have your gunsmith simply drill the rifle compensator the size to slip over a Dan Wesson barrel nut, weld 2 nuts together, then weld the brake to the nut that protrudes from the shroud. Of course a competent professional would have to engineer and test the device for safety and address all legal issue concerning its manufacture.

I have been playing around with some ideas of my own, and I am talking to someone about producing these as well. Here are some of the ideas I have been considering. These are only for discussion and not for implementation. They have not been engineered or tested for safety and legal issues have not been addressed. THESE ARE ONLY FOR DISCUSSION.

Looks like a good idea. Similar to the design that they use on their alaskan guide .445 supermag. I talked with my brother and he says that your design is more of a compensator design. It will help reduce muzzle flip only. The one he is trying to make is a muzzle brake. It should help with Muzzle flip and recoil. Just two different ways to do similar things.
In your picture, it looks like your compensator will fit around the outside of the shroud, is that correct? I think (looking at your pictures) that it will be on the outside of the sides of the shroud, but not the top and bottom. Is this to help with stability? Keep us all posted here on your progress. This is getting fun.

On my 357 mag. I bought a compensator that replaces the barrel nut and it is 1.52 inches long and 0.67 inches in diameter with an exit hole of 0.387 inches. It has round holes in a three two pattern around it and the holes are 0.176 inches in diameter. I wouldn't take much to scale it up to the 445.
For the 44 it would be two inches long and 0.789 inch outside diameter.

Hey Guys,
I got my DW 44 8" barrel back from my Brother. He could not match the thread (economically) so instead he did re thread the nut end of my barrel to match the new muzzle brake. IT LOOKS AWESOME!!! I am so happy with the results. He said that another good thing about having to change the threads is that I can't put the muzzle brake on any of my other barrels. He is worried about the debris blowing in my face. Family you know.

So anyway, I have some pictures which I will upload on Monday (left laptop at work) of the compensator, gun, and the targets I shot at. I have a couple of steel plates that I quickly ran a cylinder (or two) through. It shot very well at the 25 or so yards. I didn't site in the scope yet but soon will. The recoil was nothing. About like shooting 357 mags. I love the brake he chose to convert. It has holes even out the front that are supposed to help do something. I can't remember what but it looks so cool. Can't wait to share with you guys and gals. See you soon.

When I get a chance to really try for a good group, I will let you know how it works. So far (after 40 shots) I am very happy with the results using Winchester White box 44 Rem Mag 240gr JSP. (I don't reload)
