Accuracy of the Savage Model 99 in .250 Savage
« on: December 15, 2005, 02:00:28 PM »
Hi:

I read many reports of the excellent accuracy of the Savage bolt action rifles. How is the accuracy of the Savage Model 99 in  the .250 Savage? I was thinking of using it for Coyotes.

Thanks,

I only have one and have never shot any factory ammo, but it'll do 1.25 MOA with most loads for five shot groups.
It is the duty of the good citizen to love his country and hate his gubmint.

250 Savage in Model 99

This is a great topic. I have an old Model 99 takedown made in 1921. I have shot several whitetails with it and just love it's nice size, weight and good accuracy.

I achieve 1" 3-shot groups routinely with the rifle and I probably could even tweek that a bit.  I handload all of my ammunition for it. On my 250 Savage, typically I shoot modestly priced 100 grain Rem Core-Lokt bullets and IMR-4350 powder.

The 250 Savage to me is a great round. Light in recoil, reasonable power, and properly loaded will match or beat the now-famous 243 Winchester.  This cartridge is also a nice piece of American sporting arm history. Go ahead and fire up that 250!

:D My .250 has only had a few handloads though it. For me, it wasn't worth the effort, when I have very accurate bolt action rifles. The old 99 has lots of drop to the stock making it less than great with a scope. :( For all that I like the little thing. Last fall I shot my buck antelope with it and 100 grain Silvertip factory load. All I use it, I just buy a few boxes of ammo from the factory. The 250 probably  had not been fired  in 15 years before that buck last year. Probably be a few more years til I get around to using it again. So a few boxes of factory stuff goes a long way. :D
