Posted similar issue on Handgun Hunting Forum

Will likely be providing a Field Grade 454 to Magnaport for a custom hunting pistol.  Thinking of the following mods...

Magnabrake finished at 8.5"
satin honed finish
action job
cylinder stripes
numbered cylinder holes
jeweled hammer and trigger
three ring scope mount
slings swivels with a nylon sling

Options you would add or delete? Alternate calibers or guns?

I already hunt with a FA 83 44 Magnum and a T/C 7-30 Waters.  Want a ultimate hunting revolver and I won [!!!] a certificate for free custom work from Magnaport.  I provide the pistol and they will do what I want.

Thanks.
Be honest with yourself.  Can you guarantee you would hit a paper plate at 250 yards...100 yards...50 yards?  Then you have no business replacing the plate with a live animal.

Wal now I realize that what I prefer the rest of the world seems not to, but since you asked:

Magnabrake finished at 8.5"

Just can't see the need for a brake. No way I'd do that and I'd want the barrel no longer than 7.5"

satin honed finish

Really dunno what this option is but to me the finish on the FA Field grade guns is precisely what a hunting gun should have. I'd not change it.

action job

Perhaps it's just becuz all the ones I've handled had a factory action job but I've yet to see an FA trigger I'd even think of messing with. Ya can't improve on perfection.

cylinder stripes

Strictly cosmetic. Iffen ya like em go for em.

numbered cylinder holes

Finally an option I actually like and would definite recommend. Dunno why FA doesn't do it already.

jeweled hammer and trigger

Again strictly cosmetic. If you like it go for it. Does look nice.

three ring scope mount

For sure if you're going to scope it go for one. I consider the T'SOB the best but am aware of none for the FA guns that isn't a good one. Me I'd use factory irons.

Not on a bet. When you're actually hunting the gun belongs in your hand. When not a shoulder holster is the way to carry if it has a long barrel and on the hip either strong side or cross draw if the barrel is shorter. Personally I'd not own a gun set up for a sling if not a rifle.

The FA Field grade guns come with those UGLY Pachmayr grips. No way I'd own that set up. Get a nice set of grips like the ones on the Premier whether from FA or MagnaPort.

I gotta say I agree with everything GB had to offer here......especially the part about those UGLY Pachmayr's, it oughta be illegal to do that to FA.

The one option I would not do without on a FA is the inverted crown. I would see if MP offers this. The inverted crown looks great and places the end of the rifling deep in the barrel for protection.

On the larger calibers I would have micarta or bone grips of some sort. The pac’s are ugly and wood grips are know to split on these guns. I believe they split most times because people shoot off a bench allowing the grip to rest on the bench top. Either way, I don’t want to risk waiting for another set of grips.

When you have a gun customized it’s a personal thing. If you want those extras then go for it. Heck, if the extras were free I might be tempted to live a little too. There’s nothing wrong with owning a BBQ gun or two.

Take Care,
Scott

call me a monkey....

if i won something like that,  i would send them either a ruger redhawk for customizing,  or a ruger sp 101 in 357 mag.   and now i will tell you why...

to me,  a f.a. comes about as close to perfect as i need.  i couldnt see wasting that kind of work on a gun doesnt need tweeking.   the redhawk, or sp101, on the otherhand,  can benifit greatly from some tweeking from the folks at magnaport.    in the end you would end up with a very nice gun.   with the f.a.,  you already have a very nice gun.

just my opinion....

I second that.
