I am contemplating trading for a new CDL in .35 Whelen...I have not shot a CDL nor really familiar with the 35 Whelen but it would basically be my "big woods" rifle for Bear, Elk, etc but I wouldn't rule out big Canada whitetails either. :lol:

Any opinions or experiences with this combo...how accurate out to 250-300yds max?

What is the recoil comparable to? Say a 300 Rem Mag?

I have had a 7600 in .35 since about 1988. I love the round and the versitility of being able to shoot bullets from 158 grains to 300 if I want to. But, settling on one bullet like the 225 spitzer is a better path to take. I don't find the recoil bad at all. A Simms recoil pad helps ove the plastic but plate. It should not be any worse than an equal rifle in 30/06. The felt recoil is a little less because of the bore diameter and the ability to push the gasses more easily down the larger tube. When I go up to 250's and a case full of powder for brown bears it does let you know that it went off. But I don't know if they are needed.

I have never recovered a bullet.......they just go through things that get in the way. If the price is right I am going to have mine rebarreled to .35 AI for a little more umph.

The accuracy should be the same as with any other rifle. Too each his own.

I was at Cabela's last fall and looked at both a 7600 and a CDL in 35 Whelen. Both were very nice...and if money were no object they'd both be in the safe. I own two Remington Classic, 300 Savage and 257 Roberts, they are both simply amazing guns.

Along the same line are the CDL's and as stated earlier I have handled one in the 35 Whelen and it handled very nicely and the look was incredible. If I do every come up with the $600 for a CDL it will be the the 35.

Nevery shote a 300 rem but have a 35 in a CDL with the recoil pad they but on I don't find it all that bad rather like the gun and the cal.

Go get the 35 Whelen, great gun/caliber for anything the big woods has to offer.
I am not an expert, but have had enough experience with the 35 Whelen to address your questions. I have a M700 Classic in 35 Whelen and the rifle shoots under MOA with handloads. Target shooting is done with the Seirra 225 gr bullet and hunting is with the Nosler 225 gr Partition.
I once shot a 2.5" group with 225 gr Seirra at 300 yds off the seat of a 3 wheeler.
I have taken 17 WT deer and a 250 lb Black Bear. I only blood trailed 2 deer, which were 30-40 yds and the blood was very heavy. The rest were bang-flop kills. Always get a nice exit wound with the Nosler 225 gr PT's.

Recoil is between 30-06 and 300 Win Mag.
