HOWA 3 Position Safety

Did Howa always make a 3 position safety, or is it a new feature on the 1500?
 Also How is the stock design on the Lightning model?

I have a Howa 1500 from about two years ago, and it doesn't have the three position safety, just a two position. I believe that I read that the newer models have the three position style. I was a little disapointed with the synthetic stock on my howa, but it has held up well. I'm not afraid to take it into the brush, like I would be with a pretty wood stock. That being said, Boyds has some really nice looking wood and laminate stocks that look awesome on the 1500.
