I like the Ruger because of the styling. I can make it shoot, if it doesn't want too.  :D

RYE_TYLER - Remington seems to have some quality issues lately. The Ruger's to me are a better buy plus their scope mounting system is one of the best out there. The only negative I've heard is the trigger which you can either replace or have it worked on by a gunsmith. I've got four Ruger's and two Remington's so I have experience with both. I'd get the Ruger... CEJ...

Hands down the very best between the two is the Ruger M77MKII.  While it might have a hard trigger pull(not everyone does) it is still way ahead of any Remington.  Go to http://hunting.about.com/od/guns/a/aacbsnewsrem700.htm to read about Remington’s triggers/safeties issue.  Lawdog

in remington's defense, i have two model 700s made in the last few years which are very nice and neither one has any issues at all. they also are very accurate.

just because something happens at all does not mean it will happen every time. those 700's that have the problems are not typical.

i know i will hear it for saying this but just as you guys communicate your experiences, so i will communicate mine.

I have both and I'd go with the Remington. Mine seem to fit me better and seem to be more accurate than the Ruger. However, you can't go wrong either way.

It all depends on what you have an eye for.   Sometimes Rifles can be like Women......you have high maintenance Women and low maintenance Women.

If you want a rifle that will constantly have to be looked after, protecting it from every little scratch and ding, then buy the Ruger.  But then dont complain about the constant costs when she looks good hanging on your arm.

But if you want a 'functional' plain Jane rifle that can take a good day hunting, complete with all of the hazards, then go with the Remington.  In most cases the Remington is not the wall hanger that  Ruger is.

Remington all the way. Dont forget to add the price of an aftermarket trigger or at least a fairly time consuming smith adjustment to the Ruger. I have 5 700's from 1983-2002 and I have yet to experience any of the "quality" issues that so many bring up. All 5 are tack drivers as well. Get what you like but dont let the bashers scare you away from the Rem's.

:-D  :-D Plain Jane rifle.  That's rich.  :-D  :-D   Remington M700 has to be the most dolled up rifle in it's price class.  You want a "Plain Jane" rifle then you are looking at a Savage.  As far as Ruger goes at least they don't have numerous law suits pending, not to mention the numerous ones they have already settled out of court, over their trigger/safety issues.

I just bought a new ADL Remington 700 30.06 and it's a great rifle so far. Shoots great and very accurate. The trigger is good, not a target  trigger but, it's not a target gun. I owned many rifles and I like Ruger and Remington but, the Remingtons just feel better to me.
The Rem's are easier to work on than Rugers, if your tinkerly inclined.

Both of these are fine rifles, and to put one over the other is crazy.  With these, I would include the Winchester Model 70 as well.  Thank goodness we've three US manufacturers making guns of this quality.  There are lemons on any lot, at any time, but for the most part these US-made rifles perform just fine for the average american.

It's all about preference - don't tell me the Rem 700 is a bad rifle if I use it well.  Don't tell me a Ruger 77 is a bad rifle if I use it well.  Don't tell me a Win Model 70 is a bad rifle if I use it well.

Each is his to own.

My experiences have been the same.  I would go with the Remington.  I have a Mountain Rifle in .280, and its one of my favorite rifles.  MOA accurate with good ammo, and lightweight.

Have several of each. Not to bash either, I have had better "out of the box" luck with the rugers. All five are shooters. All my rem. 700 are shooters , but seems to take a little more work to get them there.

The fit and finish on the Ruger doesn't hold a candle to the Remington, sharp edges, burrs, etc.  Crappy trigger, most reputable gunsmiths won't touch a Ruger.  That said, I have a Ruger #1 I bought in 1977 (1B in 22-250) that will never be sold.
I have or have had over a dozen Rem 700's, all are more than a few years old.  While it's true that Reminton has had problems recently, even with these problems Ruger can't hold a candle.
Out of the box accuracy is next to none, with the exception of the new Savage's.  I recently bought a new 12FLV in 308win.   After break in the the groups have been averaging in the 2's and 3's with the best at .16".  That is pretty damn good for any out of the box, under $500 rifle...
No One is going to convince anyone that one is better than the other in this post,  however, I suggest you take a look at the annual sales of the Mark, against the 700, or ask a gunsmith to work on a Ruger, that's when you'll find out.....

I own both Remington & Ruger bolt guns, Model 700's in .270 Win. & .243 Win. & a model 77RL ultralight in .257 Roberts. I give a slight nod in accuracy to the Remingtons & fit/finish to the Ruger. The hunting rifle features of the model 77 ultralight I've really come to appreciate; 20" lightweight barrel & stock forend, 7 lb. weight with Leupold M8 4x scope & Montana sling included, full length of pull buttstock, control round feeding & 3 position safety. Yes, I had to sweeten up the almost 6 lb. factory trigger pull to a nice, crisp 3.5 lbs hunting pull weight but it was worth it. This rifle carries, handles, swings and points like a dream. Don't get me wrong, I like my model 700's but my new favorite hunting rifle is the Ruger model 77RL ultralight.

Doesn't hold a candle- Hum- I don't guess youv'e seen the SPS line.
My 270wsm bk&grey Lam with stainless RUGER is about as fit and finished as they come. My Rem 673 is a purrty piece too, but I would have to give the nod to the Ruger.

I would just as soon have(Opps I do) a stevens 200 over the sps.
Rem. upper line guns IMO are fine, but the lower end guns, I don't like.
Rem should have kept the Sendero line, but that would have been bad business. (they sold to well). Rem, what r u thinkin sometimes?

I have a 700 mtn rifle in .243. I like it a lot . its light comfortable and hits what I shoot at. the only problem is during deer season I cant get it away from my wife too shoot. The only ruger rifle I have experience with is a .44 deerslayer so it is not relevant in this case. I choose remington due to the years of service and dependability that I have had from them. my .243 has the detachable mag which I really enjoy until I drop it in the sand. still I like it better than the floor plate. My 7mm with the floor plate is one of my favorites but slung across my back w/ a pack I have been know to trip it and wonder why I hear little church bells ringing. Either way ask some friends that have either rifle and try them for feel. that is what I do and usualyyend up w/ good results. Good Shooting....Bill

I've never had a Ruger let me down but I have had the saftey button on a Rem 700 snap off and my hunting partner had the trigger assembly break off on him during a hunt. These were rifle built when Remington didn't have these "quality" issues like they do now. I don't think I'd ever trade my M700 Classic in 35 Whelen but I've had my gunsmith replace the trigger and saftey on it. I've just bought 2 Rugers in the past year and the fit and finish is excellent on both of them. My advice is to look them both over, fire them if you can and then pick the one YOU like best! Good luck with what ever you choose! CEJ...  :-)

Oh boy, what can I say that hasn't already been said?I've got Winchesters,Rugers and Remingtons and if I had to choose between any of them,I couldn't do it.I really can't say which one is better for they all feel good to me and I am a lucky one who has all rifles that shoot very good groups.I reload and do a lot of shooting.I've never had issues with any of them and like I say,I shoot a lot.I have been in your situation too, wondering which one to get, which model and brand.I can't knock any of the manufactures out there. They all have some nice dependable, accurare rifles out there.Just do yourself a favor and go to as many gun shops as you can and just handle them all. It's like looking for a girl friend or wife, when the right one comes along, you'll know.

Yeah, the 77's are "pretty" but the 700's have been killing stuff for 10,000 years without a hitch (so, I never was too good at thesense of time stuff...)  go with a 700, there is a reason it's legend.
