Tube is made of 17-4 stainless, trunnions of ?? might be stainless.
.25 caliber
Wood to get an idea of what it will look like when metal stand is finished.

The tube & trunnions:

Looks like a modeler could take that & mount it on a scratch-built 8 wheel "o" platorm just like that famous photo--- (Did you know they laid that track spur especially in a curve so they could move the point of aim by shifting the car?  note that the "supplies" [BOMBS!] are well removed during firing!)

Cool idea - I'll bet I can come up with some popsicle sticks that can be trimmed to size!

Hey Tim, I can't seem to find the mortar in the picture. Whoa, wait a minute, there it is, right on top of the powder can.  Gee, all I could see at first was the powder can. :)  :)  :)

Looks like half the powder gas will exit that giant vent.   :?

We'll find out someday.  It fits the fuse I have.

And if it's too big, the next one will be smaller.

It is the first one wherein I drilled the fuse hole first, then cut the bore.  I will do that in the future (on these small ones), having broken bits cutting the fuse hole - when it comes through into the bore.  Cutting the fuse hole first reduced the stresses/risk of breaking the small bit AND to my surprise allowed me to adjust the bore depth to the fuse hole very easily on the lathe.

The big learning part of this one was building the fixture to hold the tube in the mill to cut the spot-faces for the trunions (silver soldered into place).

Not a lot of time, nor materials in building at this scale.  So I can afford to do things casually.   On the third one, or maybe the tenth one, I've refined a whole lot of little points and built my skills.  And in the process I've got 3 or 10 variations from which to choose features that I like.

Perhaps the next one of that size will be attached to a belt buckle.  That'd be real neat. :?

I'd love to do TIG welding on the trunions.  I can do wire, but on this scale that is way too sloppy!

These trunions are silver soldered into the pockets.  I take a little powdered flux and drop into the pocket, snip a short piece of the silver solder wire and heat until it flows into most of the bottom.  THen I take the trunion and put it into place, heating the whole thing and squeezing together with pliers.

IF the pockets are located, aligned and square the process works well.
If not, the results are obvious.

Belt buckle, eh?  I think we'd discussed that option in an earlier thread.  I don't have the abbs for it.

Well Cat, I thought that perhaps you had been working out sufficently enough that the abs would now be developed to handle the recoil of that belt buckle mortar. :-D

Thats a fine looking barrel. The 13 inch Seacoast mortar is probably my favorite piece of artillery, I guessit has a real serious look to it. Being painted black and beefy like it can deliver a real "whoop A--" That has been on my project list to build one on the railroad car platform. So I had the Irishman fire a .50 cal barrel over. I think I might need a larger train car than you would need but not much larger.

I like it.  So is it beer can or bowling ball bore?  It must have taken you a while to build that giant can of powder.
