Hi-power rifle scope for use as a club
« on: December 05, 2005, 09:39:56 AM »
Hey fellas,
I'm looking to get a new scope for a remingotn model 700 .300 remington ultra mag, which I am going to buy this spring.  I am trying to find something that is fairly inexpensive (I'm willing to pay for quality) but that can take a BEATING.  Most of its use is going to be thrashing through the woods in Alaska, so I'm looking for something I can accidentally knock against a tree or me falling off a foot bridge, etc, and still stay fairly true.  I also want to make sure it can stand up to lots of rounds out of the RUM.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Be more careful?  The treatment you describe will certainly be a test for any scope.  I'd suggest one of the brands with a life time warranty for sure......I personally wouldn't expect a scope to stay true after being subject to such treatment........but would love to know if you find one! :-D

I inherited an old Weaver K4 made back in 1950s. Solid steel tube. My dad banged it around pretty good - some big dents in the tube but it held together and held zero. It was in the JR dovetail mounts and they were also sturdy. Today, I'd go for an Elite from Bushnell. They are tested on magnum rifles by firing 10,000 shots. Also, they have rainshield and it works great in rain or snow. You can breath on the eyepiece without fogging it. They are medium priced but decent glass. I would put the scope in rotary dovetail mounts - several companies make them now. I think they are about as solid as any.

You are asking for a lot from a scope, no matter the brand. But for my guns a Leupold is a must.  :D

First, I think you are talking about a fixed power scope.  Less stuff inside to break.  In a 1.5 or 2.5 or 3 or 4 at the most.  Maybe one of the scopes touted for shotguns.  They're 'posed to be paralax free at about 75 yards.

The old steel tube Weavers would and could take a licking.  (in one of their ads, it showed Chill Wills -a movie star for you young'uns- driving a nail with one)  I don't know if there is a comparable scope being made today or not.
However, don't forget Murphy's law that if something is gonna break, it will break at the most embarassing moment.  Say, like when you're fixin' to get et by a bear.

Not likely to happen with an inexpensive scope.
If you are willing to pay for quality, just get a Leupold. At least you have the lifetime warranty if you do manage to break it.

Buy a quality scope

There are quite a few starting with $250, and up. That Bushnell 3200, Nikon Monarch, Weaver Grand Slam, whatever fits your eyes.  A good scope will seem to find it's way to one of your guns as you trade or get a few more.  A marginal quality scope sits in the gun cabinet and is basically dead money.  Cheaper to buy quality in the long run.  Buckfever
