Does anyone have any experience with the Ruger bolt action .44 Rem Mag?  It's called the m-77/44, and comes with a 4 round detachable magazine and an 18.5" barrel.  Looks pretty cool.

Anyone have any experience with it?

I do not have first hand experience. However I friend of mine has one and hunts whitetail and Mule deer with it. I think he has a fixed 4 power on it. He loves it.

I had one in the blued/walnut configuration.  Sold it before I got to shoot it.  I had a 4x fixed Burris for it and the the package seemed to fit well together.   I can only tell you it handled real well; balance was nice w/ the 18 1/2" barrel.  FWIW, it's approximately the same length as a carbine levergun, but lighter.  Wish I hadn't sold it.

Ruger discontinued these in 2004.

I have a Ruger M77-44 in Walnut & Blue!

It's really a quick handling rifle and it's lightweight!
I have a 2.5 power Weaver "shotgun" scope on it!  This seems to be a good choice for the rifle!
I get about a 3 inch group with my handloads!  Haven't tried factory loads!
I haven't seen a deer to shoot with it yet, but it will happen someday!

NOTE:  I also have a matching M77-22 in 22 Hornet!  With that one, I know I can headshoot a gray squirrel at 75 yards!

I had one of their newer semi-auto versions, and it was a lot of fun to shoot. Recoil was a little more than I expected, but still fairly accurate.  We had no trouble getting 2000fps with 200gr XTP, but never tried anything heavier.

For me the problem with all the current Ruger .44s with the detachable magazine is that they will not accept cartridges with most heavy (265-300+) bullets.  The magazine length is too short for long-loaded cartridges; this limits it usefullness slightly.  My stainless 77/44 shot well and was a dream to carry, but the lack of heavy bullet capability caused me to sell it.  Major maker factory loads will work, but a few of the smaller commercial loads will not fit/function.  Other than that it is a fine little rifle which lives up to Ruger's reputation.

Lone Star:  Thanks for the head's up on the cartridge length/magazine issue with this gun.  I had wondered about that, actually.  I handled one in a gun store some time ago and it looked a little short to me.   Thanks again.

I have a 77/44 with integral suppressor. Very quiet and reasonably accurate. I shoot 300 grn bullets and haven’t had any problems with them fitting in the magazine

Since I'm a big PETA supporter I wanted to hunt without causing any undue stress to the animals. A silenced rifle allows me to hunt quietly so I don't disturb the rest of the animals in the forest.

Now that is a neat rifle.  Outside of cost, what does it take to be able to legally own/shoot/hunt one of these?

First, you have to live in a suppressor legal state. Then you have to find a class III dealer to purchase the suppressor from. He will give you the paperwork to fill out. You have it signed by your local Chief Law Enforcement Official, and then send it to the ATF with $200 for the Tax stamp. After ATF approval you can pick up your suppressor.

I had a blue and walnut model.  All I wanted it to do was 3" at 100yds, but noooooo.  It's best was 5" at a hundred (nice round groups though) no matter what I fed it, even tried floating the barrel.  Man that was a sweet little gun, I loved the way it looked.  Maybe if I come across one again someday, I might give it another try.
I aim to please - but often miss.
