If you like the gun just do it to it.  Much more gun than you will ever need for whitetails or even muleys.  Only you can decide and only with experience.  I prefer a 7X57 or one of the .30 standard calibers myself, and with a 2 1/2 or a 4 power scope.  There is no need for high powered variable scopes on hunting rifles.  Tons of deer have been killed with open sights.  All we are doing here is making money for the gun companies, but maybe that's not so bad.

Kotupod, a limbsaver will probably cost you about $30.     Do you know that you will most likely shoot a non magnum much better than a magnum? I've been following all your posts and can't help but be reminded of myself when I was a young hunter and how If I would have had a more appropriate firearm I would have put even more meat in the freezer.   If you buy a 7mm08 or 308  you will most likely kill more deer etc. because recoil will be one less thing on your mind when you shoot. You will have enough to think about at the critical moment like safety, shot placement, shooting form etc.  These are high powered rifles that  should serve you very well and you can always get a magnum later if you still think you wan't one.  I truly believe you will be more succesful with one of these or even a 30 06 and after all, isn't that what really counts? :D

Yes, Im buying a 30-06, im just considering a recoil pad because of the lite gun. But during the heat of the moment while hunting, i don't think about recoil anyways, and with your adrenaline running you don't even notice it most of the time.

I'd say that's a good choice.  I remember several kids in high school who hunted with a 30.06.  I didn't really consider the very good recoil pads that are available now that we didn't have then.  A good limbsaver works great, and I've put them on just about all my guns........there's also mercury damping systems that a fellow can install in the stock if necessary.  As big as you are, if the rifle fits you, and you mount it correctly, I don't think you'll have to much problem with the recoil.  30.06 ammo is pretty cheap as well......all in all, I'd say that's a good choice......

Still liking the Tika?  Have you looked at a Ruger?  They make a very good looking rifle on a well designed action......I don't think there is any plastic on them and they are made in America......

I would say go with 308, simply becuase its ammo is the cheapest of the 3 (06 , 270, and 308)..... I think Gander Mountain sells like a can of 400 rounds for like 59.99 (can't beat that, great for range shooting and practice)

I ordered a Tikka T3 Lite Stainless 30-06 the other day. Thanks guys for all the help. I just really liked the Tikka, and after thinking about it I didn't mind the plastic. After all the whole stock is plastic.

I picked up a Ruger and I just turned me off, it was really heavy and the ballance seemed off, but thats probably because I was holding the Tikka before. The action on the Tikka was also much smoother.

The only reason I ordered the 30-06 is because they didn't have a 308 in stock, and I was debating between the two. I just cant wait till it comes in, which might be a while since my FFL and the store I ordered from are having some communication issues. I'll try and hang on  :lol: .

Kotupod, I hope everything works out O.K. for you, because I think that you got some very bad advice here, right from the start. First, from the guys that recommended a .300 Mag as a good deer gun for a young hunter. It is very hard for me to not call these folks some real bad names right now. But suffice to say, they are full of dog doo-doo.
And I hope you don't get one of the exploding Tika barrels, no one really knows were they all are. A Winchester, Ruger, or Remington, would have been a  better choice.
