Opinions and Ideas needed?
« on: December 04, 2005, 06:18:45 AM »
I have decided to have my idea of a perfect whitetail rifle built for hunting the thick nasty cedar swamps I so dearly love here in Maine. I want to have Remington 700 Short Action rebarreled and rechambered to 350 Remington Mag with a 19.5" sporter weight barrel with recessed crown. Have the barrel and action finished in a matte black teflon and pillar bedded into a McMillian stock. I would than top it off with a Leupold Vari X III in 1.75x6 with Matte finish. I am hoping to have the weight of the gun under 7 lbs. I know Remington puts out a Model 7 Custom KS in 350 mag that is almost identical to what I am trying to do. Now I need some advice on barrel makers, finishes, triggers, and gunsmiths to do the work.

Thanks,
Erick

you will find a list of gunsmiths in Maine here:

Spend some time talking to them about your project and se what they recommend. Most gunsmiths have a "favorite" barrel that they work with and have their own biases on triggers and finishes. Find one that you feel connected to and be very specific about what you decide you want.

As long as this is opinions and ideas, I got one. You say whitetails in Maine. Why a 350 Rem Mag? A friend of mine years ago had one on a 660 Remington and that thing was no fun to shoot. Why not a 358 win? Also, I'd want about an 8# rifle. If the rifle is well balanced, it's suprising how light it feels and how well it handles. I have a 1903 Springfield built by Paul Jaeger in 1946 that is a dream to carry and shoot, it's about
8 1/2#!!!

Don,
I have nothing against the 358 and even considered it but I have a soft spot for the 350. As for the weight of the rifle 8lbs is 8lbs no matter how well it is balanced and is about 1.5 to 2 lbs heavier than I would want to carry. As for a light 350 not being fun to shoot, all I can say is that it is a hunting rifle and will not be seeing any use from a bench (other than sighting in) or for casual shooting so that doesn't concern me to much. I even looked at the 348 but for some reason I just like the 350 rem. I wish my dad never got rid of his mdl 600.

Thanks,
Erick

Erick,
I look forward to seeing what your rifle looks like. I am in the planning stages of a similar rifle for use in the adirondacks.   I will be doing a 358 in ruger tang safety. I have pretty much settled on an ER shaw barrel for cost reasons mostly. Have you fired a short barreled 350 mag? I Am trying to decide on my barrel length and I have no experience with barrels under 20". My inital feeling is to do a 21" and if it is too long I can have it bobbed.  I welcome any comments.

Keep us updated as your project progresses.

My buddy's 350 mag was a Rem 660 mag with a 20" barrel. We shot a lot of cast bullet's thru it because it was a heavy recoiler. I don't think the 20" barrel was a draw back at all. In fact my own 308 win in a 660 Rem was one of my all time favorites. Your talking the same case I think and won't be using all that slow of powders. A rifle with a 20 to 22" barrel handles really well.

Speaking of that old 350 Rem, with cast bullets it was a lot of fun to shoot an I suspect it would have made a dandy woods rifle/cartridge with those cast bullets.

When I lived in Alaska and until I got over the fear of a bear behind every tree, I thought I'd really have liked to have that old cannon. That had to be about a perfect dangerious game gun. Short, quick handling, powerful as hell and,,,,, well,,, some people thought it was ugly, noy me!
