Cannon Ring
« on: December 02, 2005, 12:11:06 PM »
I had some time last night to work in the shop but not enough to do much of anything on my 12 pdr coehorn.  I decided to build a cannon ring.  It is about 1 1/8” diameter by 2 1/2” long with a 1/2” bore and 1/4” powder chamber.  It should be fun.  I need to get some 1/16” fuse so I can test it out.

I drilled the ring part on the drill press so it is a little off center.  It only took a bout an hour and a half to build.  If I decide I like it I may build a better one. I think I might want to wear gloves when I fire it.

I've heard of the term hand cannon before but you have taken it to the literal extreme!  :)

P.S.  I want one! Oh to have the talent to do that kind of work.

Gloves would certainly help to keep from getting burned, but as for the finger - I can see the accident report now ....  after the "ring-cannon was surgically removed from the finger .... "

I think I would substitute a dowel or pipe for the finger and give her a try!

CU_Cannon... Another great job.  A lot of folks sit around popping/cracking their knuckles.  Looks like you have come up with a mechanical knuckle popper.
You won't be able to retreat very far when firing that one!

I was actually making a mandrel to turn some washers for my 12 pdr coehorn when I had the idea.  When I got that done I chucked up a piece of scrap and went at it.  This one is pretty crude.  The only measurement I made was for the vent so I would be sure to hit the bore.  It should be a bunch of fun though.

It will make me appreciate how great it feels when it mends and I haven’t done anything truly stupid in a while.

I just ordered some 1/16” fuse.  So the testing will commence when it arrives.

Like tropico , I want one! (even if it does not work out to be hand fireable)

Remember that the recoil is a product of the weight of the projectile, the weight of the "cannon" and the velocity of the projectile- so the lighter the ball the less the recoil.

what did you bore it to?
maybe one of those little (6mm) paint balls would work, they are very light(2.5 grains)
And a roman candle ball is 4.0 grains

Have FUN! & LET us know what happens!

Merry Christmas!
