308 or 30-06 for a Tikka T3?
« on: December 01, 2005, 02:12:38 AM »
I was looking at a Tikka T3 the other day and I noticed that they only seem to have one action length.  The magazine well for both the 308 and 30-06 were the same - does this negate the "advantage" of the short action rifle?  I'm tooled up for reloading a 308 but I'm thinking that I'll get the 30-06 since they look to be the exact same rifle.  Am I right or are there differences in the short-action cartridge T3's?

I'm also wondering if it's be possible to get the 308 and then use 30-06 magazines, loading  the bullets out as far the throat will allow - particularly with a cast bullet that I have that I don't want to seat below the neck.

Don't do it.  Just get the T3 in .30-06 and use .30-06 ammo.

The T3 is an excellent rifle.  I know that the Tikka T3s in the WSM cartridges have the long thoats, but I do not know if this is also true for the other standard and magnum cartridges.

Thanks Zachary, I'm leaning towards 30-06 more for the simple fact that I can get one.  NE gun stores don't sell many 308's (all .270, 30-06 and the WSM's) and the shop I go to says that the demand for the T3's is so great that they have a hard time getting them in.
