M70 Sporter or CDL?
« on: November 28, 2005, 07:00:28 PM »
Hey guys,

I would like to hear some pros and cons on both the winchester M70 sporter III and the Remington CDL.  I would like to get one of these rifles in .300 win mag for elk/deer hunting.  The main thing I am looking for is the rifles ability to be confortable when shooting these big magnums.

thanks,
Preston

I prefer the Win. mod. 70 for two reasons. The flat bottomed reciever with forged recoil lug(I glassbed every rifle and the flatbottomed Win works best).
The Win. trigger is superior to the Rem one. Win. extractor is stronger by design, but I've never had a Rem.700 let me down.

As far as recoil between the two I don't believe you could tell the difference between them.  The .300 Win isn't a bad kicker, and is easily handled with a little practice.

I ordered my first CDL in 300 RUM, while waiting for it I began to get a little apprehensive because of all the posts on recoil. After shooting it and I have shot it alot, I can say that for me it's actually quite comfortable to shoot. This last weekend I took it to a friends house for a family thanksgiving get together (he has a range at his house)  and of course everyone gravitated towards the range after dinner. While most were reluctant at first once someone shot it everyone had to and very accurately even on their first shot. I really think the design of the CDL lends itself to comfortable shooting in the big magnums and the R3 recoil pad plays a big part in that. I've been thinking also of a 300 Win mag or .35 Whelan and it will definitely be another CDL and if it's as accurate as my other 2 I will be happy. :D
