3-1/2" FA97 finally!
« on: November 25, 2005, 02:31:44 AM »
     Well, I finally did it!   My new 45 Colt FA97 with 3-1/2” barrel, round butt with black micarta grips and honed action is paid for and should arrive on Tuesday.   I actually (for once) asked my patient wife if she’d mind if I spent $2,000- on a new CC single action.   I guess the fact that I carry 24/7 and my explanation that this is a once in a lifetime investment in one of the finest handguns available, which also suits my tastes and needs, clinched it.

I’m sending an order off to Midway on Friday for a couple holsters, maybe bullets and a new mold too.   The holsters are a no brainer, I think, but I’m guessing I’ll eventually order or stitch up a Van Horn style high carry crossdraw.

My real question is: … for the shorter FA97 cylinder, any personal experience or advice regarding cast or jacketed bullets (or molds) with a crimp groove located far enough toward the tip of the bullet to permit a secure crimp at groove, rather than attempting to taper crimp up on the ogive?   Also, any load data reference for the smaller powder space with this shorter COL?

I have a couple boxes of factory Win Super-X 225gr Silvertip HP that have been my CC round my Taurus 450 snubby and American Derringer, and I’ll try the new FA97 with it.

Thanks guys, will share my results down the road a bit,    Joe

Very nice gun and options you chose. If I ever marry I hope that my wife will be as understanding. Congrats on her too.

A real nice holster is the “Double Agent” by El Paso Saddlery. This holster looks real nice in full floral design. It’s a high ride holster that can be worn strong side or cross draw. I prefer this holster for my 5.5” 97’s. My second choice would be a 1920 crossdraw.

Wish I could be helpful on your caliber gun combination though.

Take Care,
Scott
