Spotting Finish on New M70 Barrel
« on: November 23, 2005, 10:07:09 AM »
I had my Winchester Model 70 .25 WSSM in a gun case and after a few days at hunting camp I noticed that the barrel had spots of light grey on it.  I have tried everything to get the spots off.  Nothing seems to work.  I need help.

Any ideas on this problem guys?????

If it is rust, the usuall remedy is to rub with fine steel wool (OOOO) dipped in oil. Light grey doesn't sound like rust though. Maybe the bluing is being removed by something in the lining of the case? If the bluing is damaged, a touch-up with cold blue is what I would do.

Thanks for the response Ramrod, but if it is hte finish I think I will send it back to the factory and let them do the work.  It is a new gun.  When you look at this barrel the finish looks all splotchy, blue and grey.  I have never seen this before and thought maybe someone had, but it looks like everone is away for the holidays.

Happy holidays pal.

Tried that and it didn't help any.  I just think that the factory let an unfinished or not properly finished gun out the door.  I just hate of the idea that I have to spend money to send this gun back.  If they screwed up they should pay, wouldn't you think?

time to find out how good their customer service is. call 'em and tell 'em and see if they will send you a tag and such so you don't have to pay shipping.

if you are polite and say something like "if you guys can send me out something for shipping, i will get it right in," i would think they would be happy to. i would mention how much you like the gun otherwise and kinda butter 'em up before you ask for free shipping though.  :)

go to their website and find the CS number, that's how i would handle it. and if they say no or are rude, i would casually mention how the remington 700's are looking better and better. lol

Thanks mjbgalt for the reply.  I am sorry I didn't get backwith you sooner, but we are in the middle of deer season and I am busy filling my tags.

That sounds like a good idea and I will propably do it.  It is still blocthy, but is a tack driver.  I killed a doe out to 180 yards.  That is the longest shot I have ever made here in Virginia.  Most shots are taken in dense woods at about 50 or less yards.  I would love to keep this shooter, but still want to make it look good.  ;)

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!      :D
