Which Is better for varmits?
« on: March 06, 2003, 08:25:09 AM »
I was wondering what would be better.  Say that cost didn't matter, and I would use the same ammo.  I looking at a Ruger Mini-14, and an AR-15.  I really like the auto loading .223s, but I am stumped on which would be better.  I am in Colorado and would use it on coyotes, prarie dogs.  Both Both would be not be scoped.  Thanx

I have owned several samples of both the Ruger Mini-14 and the Colt AR-15 series, and reloaded the .223 for some 25 years.

I've yet to see or shoot a stock Ruger Mini-14 that can shoot tighter than 2 1/2" to 3" at 100 yards.

A stock AR-15 type rifle will routinely shoot into 1 1/2" to 1 3/4" right out of the box.

Accurizing accessories are widely available for the AR-15, but you have to go to custom re-barreling to make the Mini014 shoot.  You can easily have two or three times the purchase price of the Mini-14 before it is accurate enough for you.

For my money, a stock AR-15 design from any of the name-brand manufacturers is a much better choice.   Ask any military competitive shooter.
