mod 700 stock screws
« on: November 21, 2005, 08:09:02 AM »
i recently bought a rem 700 police rifle in .308 this is my first remmy ever and so far im quite pleased except for a few miner things like the swivel studs not being tight but anyway i was out shooting it for the first time yesterday using win 180gr pp's to break it in (normally i reload but have yet to get .308 dies)i got the gun sighted in at 100yrds and it was shooting anywere between 1.5-3" groups i thought it was the ammo until i was done shooting i only shot 1 box thats all i had as i was leaving i noticed the stock screws were sightly loose  so my question is did this hurt the gun at all (everything looks ok just want to be sure)  and should i be using a torque wrench or can i just snug the screws up and check them every once in a while

snug 'em up and check them right before each hunting season.  If that.
They probably came from the factory loose.  As an FYI, it is always good policy with any new rifle to take it apart, clean it including the bore, and make sure everything is in place and snug before shooting it

It might be a good idea to tighten them using Loc-tite.  Otherwise a .308Win. will probably work the screw loose eventually.  Best wishes.

I tighten those screws hand tight almost as tight as I can. And by doing this I've never had any problems with them coming loose. :D
