To scope or not?
« on: November 11, 2005, 04:06:42 PM »
I've got a Model 83 Freedom in 44mag. w/ a 7-1/2" barrel.
Thinking of putting a scope on it, even though years ago I told myself I would not scope another handgun after missing two deer with a T/C.
Since then I taken a deer with a handgun, without a scope.
But before I bought my first Freedom Arms handgun, I shot Graybeards 44, Model 83 and at 25yds. it made one ragged hole. I've still got the target.
My primary shooting would be at paper, at ranges from 50 to 100yds. due to the accuracy of these tack drivers.
After going out west Praire Dog Shooting, deer hunting no longer interests me. In fact, I would like to try hitting a PD with a FA w/ a scope.
What do ya think?

You have a specific purpose for the gun being scoped so I’d scope it and bare no shame in the process. A scope isn’t a permanent fixture: they can be removed if need be!

Take Care,
Scott

I have two FA. One scoped, the other not. I hit much better with the scoped.

But I'm getting older & the old eyes are not what they used to be.

Like Tuckerdog, my eyes are just too old to shoot good without a scope.  My FA 454 with a 7' barrel has a Leupold  2X and without it I'd just about have to give up shooting beyond 50 yards.  As for what you should do, hey, save yourself some bucks if you can hit a 5" plate at 100 yards consistently with open sights.

Thanks, fellas for the replyes.

I myself, have trouble seeing after 46 years.
But as huge as this gun is, putting a scope on it would not hurt it's handling and toteability.
I have two Model 97's w/ 5-1/2" barrels that carry real well.
I guess I just want to wring out all of the accuracy I can out of this gun. I'v heard great things about these guns shooting rifle like accuracy at 100yds.
By the way... what brand of scopes are you using on those 454's?
Thanks again, for your input.

I am a Leupold guy, but I like Bushnell handgun scopes. I have a Bushnell 2X6X32mm on my FA 454 Casull. I don't have a problem taking a 100 yards shot with it.  :D

De 41 Mag, I also have a FA model 83 44 mag with a 7 1/2 bbl. I have a Leupold 2 1/2x8 with Lovell mounts. With my 57 year old eyes, the scope is my only option. It shoots 2 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards. I consider this firearm a 100 yard gun. Rod in Pa.

Yea, I still shoot well with open sights, but I need some help to pick out those horns through the brush.  Here's my FA 83 .44mag with a 2x bausch & lomb by Mag-na-port.  She will shoot 2 1/2" at 100 yds.  I love it!  44 Man

Again, thanks for the replies, Rod and 44 Man.

Redhawk.... that Bushnell 2X6X32 is what I'm looking at. Must be a darn good scope to hold up to the 454.

Is the 2-6x32 the trophy or the elite?

Mr. Frosty;

The Bushnell 2X6X32 is under the 3200 series which under the elite, I guess.

I also have the same scope on my S&W460 Mag. I am very impressed with the Bushnell pistol scopes.  :D
