Any S&W 460 Magnum Shooters?
« on: November 09, 2005, 03:22:21 AM »
Greetings all - I recently picked up a S&W 460 Magnum and I've taken her out to the range three times. I thought I would really like the versatility of shooting 45LC, 454 and 460's through a heavy gun. I was wrong. I frickin' love it!! Is it wrong that I find myself inexplicably drawn to the safe, cracking it open just to handle that big piece of stainless steel? Should I seek professional help?

Anyhow, has anyone found a good source for "relatively inexpensive" 460 rounds? By relatively inexpensive I mean around $1 to $1.25 per round. I've looked online with little success and a few smaller gun shops around here look at me and mutter something like "WhatchutalkinboutWillis?"

What about the compensator? I know one is to be used with jacketed ammo and the other for lead. However, is it absolutely necessary to change out for the different rounds? I'll take a box of lead 45LC's to the range and towards the end of the day throw a few 454's down the range. Any harm to the gun shooting both types of ammo through the same compensator?

Additionally, any good recommendations on scopes? I'm looking to spend $200 or less.  Anyhow, back to the safe, I think I hear my baby calling...

Well I have one and love it also. I have a Bushnell 2X6X32 mounted on it, and it shoots great. The accuracy is awesome, I get 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards all day. At 150 yards I can consistently hit a 4 inch clay target. I prefer the Bushnell handgun scopes to any of the other even though I am a Leupold guy.

I have been shooting the Hornady 200 gr. SST's in mine. I paid $20.00 for a box of 20. I won't buy Cor-bon ammo, to expensive and personal reasons.

I have some Barnes 200 gr. XTP bullets to reload but I want some printed data for them before I reload them.

As for the compensator, I shoot every thing out of the one intended for cast bullets, the reason not to shoot lead out of the jacketed compensator is because the lead will get caught in the top ports and make the compensator extremely difficult to remove. But like I said, I shoot everything out of the compensator that is for the cast bullets. I don't use the other compensator.  :D

Do you use the Bushnell Elites or Trophy?  Thanks.

I use the Bushnell Trophy's and have for quit a few years. I have never had one problem on my big boomers. I use them on my FA 454 Casull and on my 45-70 Contender barrel. I like the fact that I don't get the black out like I did when I was using the Leupold handgun scopes.  :D

I have the Elites on my 627 (.357Mag) and the Trophy on my 617 (.22LR).  I was concerned that the Trophy may not hold up to the magnum rounds --- now I know it's OK and it's cheaper, too.  I find the new 460 with the 6.5" barrel really interesting.  If I decide to add to my collection it may be it.

I trust the  Bushnell Trophy's. If I didn't, they would not be on my guns.  :D

Question for you 460 shooters
« Reply #6 on: December 11, 2005, 02:08:58 AM »
I've been eyeballing the new 460XVR, but I have a couple of questions before I take the jump.

What is the actual bullet diameter of the .460?
Does the gun manage recoil well as they say?  Compared to a FA 454?
What is the actual bullet diameter of the 460 caliber?
I see that the gun ships with a shoulder sling?  Have you used it?  How functional is it or is it cumbersome?
What did you pay for yours?

SingleFan, I started with the standard 8 3/8 inch barreled 460 Mag. It cost me $995.00. I shot it and it was a tack driver, then the Performance Center released the 10 5/8 in one and I traded in my 8 3/8  460 for it. I just had to give $150 plus my standard 460 for it. It was listed at $1169.00, I did not get to shot it a lot and went to the range yesterday to shoot it, and they had the newer 7 1.2 inch barreled PC model 460 in. It is the black one with stainless. So I talked to the owner and we worked out another deal. I got what I had into the 10.5 inch PC towards the trade and paid another $100 difference. Well, at that time, he told me the second 7.5 in PC he had was sequentially numbered to the one I was buying offered me a deal on the second one. He had them listed at $1269, but I got the second one for $1159.00. So I have now shot the 8 3/8, 10 5/8 PC and now the 7 .5 inch. I like the 7.5 inch the best. It is more balanced than the other two. Also the 7.5 PC model with black and stainless, only 500 of these guns are made. Kind of gave me an incentive to get them both.  :)

As far as the recoil, I find the 460 with the 460 rounds to have less recoil than my FA in 454 Casull. The compensator works great in my opinion. With the 454 Casull rounds in the 460, the gun is a kitten.

The bullet diameter is .452, the same as the 454 Casull. As far as the shoulder strap, I find it very useful, I can also use my shoulder rig with the 7 .5 inch barrel. All my prices are listed above. I am so glad I got the 460 Mag. Even better I now have 2 of them to go along with my two 500 Mags.  :D

So as far as having hands on experience with the 460 Mags, I think I can speak from experience with over 300 rounds fired in my first 460 mag and 100 rounds in my second PC model and yesterday I shot 45 round in my new 7.5 PC model, that the 460 Mags is a great gun. I don't think you will be disappointed. JMHO.  :D Good luck and let us know what you do.

Wife picked up a 8 3/8" for me for Chrismass for $839.  It however did not come with sling.  Is that just for the PC models?  Is there a 8 3/8" PC model also?
