Manufacture date of a 686
« on: November 08, 2005, 12:20:57 AM »
I'd like to know when my 686 is manufactured, and if there are any type-specific problems I should be aware of.

Model 686-2, serial number is AYV04xx

This one has an adjustable front sight, can anybody tell me how many 686-2 / 6" were made with those?

While I don't know I can point you in the right direction:

I have a 4" barrel 686, NO DASH, SN: AUE9xxx & it was made in 1986. Your gun would be after that date.

As long as we are looking for mfg dates, I've got three Smiths that I'd be interested in getting a birthdate for.....

M60 (no dash), 38spl, pinned bbl,   Ser# R271xxx

M36 (no dash), 38spl, pinned bbl,   Ser# J369xxx

M28-2, 357mag, pinned, recessed, Ser# N96xxx

Thanks for any reliable information you can supply.

Per Supica's & Nahas' "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson", the 686-2 was only produced in 1987.

Per the serial number range, it looks about a mid year production.

Hey Hogship

1979-1980 for the M60 (no dash), 38spl, pinned bbl,   Ser# R271xxx
1975-1976 for the M36 (no dash), 38spl, pinned bbl,   Ser# J369xxx
1970-1972 for the M28-2, 357mag, pinned, recessed, Ser# N96xxx

I've got a weak spot for N & J frames

The S&W 486/686 revolvers made with an adjustable front sight were made for PPC shooters.  The dial-selectable front sight allowed instant elevation changes for the several standard distances that PPC competitors shoot at during a course.

Try contacting the Smith factory.  I bought four digit K-22 and was also interested in when it was made. I called the factory and was told it was made in1947. I found the staff there to be very helpful. You can also have the history of your gun researched for $30. or $35 the info is on the S&W web site.........Jim
