CZ 550 and CZ 527 barrel crowns
« on: November 06, 2005, 05:51:58 PM »
I am wondering if any of you have had a professional cut a new crown on your CZ 550 or CZ 527 and it improved accuracy. My rifles shoot fantastically, but the crowns looked like someone cut them with the edge of a brick. Just wondering ... that's all. Tom Purdom

Tom,

My 550 Magnum looks about average as far as the crown is concerned.  If your rifle shoots that well, I wouldn't mess with it.  Best of luck!

My advise as well. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. My 550 lux shoots so well out of the box i"m scared to touch it.

:DI'm not about to have new crowns put on my rifles ... the things just shoot too fine. The 550 American in 7x57mm with 162 grain SSTs is an honest to God sub-half minute of angle three shot rifle from a benched sandbag rest. In fact one, and only one group I shot went .216 inch. Not too shabby for a 7mm Mauser and hot handloads. My CZ 527 Lux in its new fancy grade American Walnut CZ aftermarket stock and glassbedding goes sub half minute as well, but for five shots with the 50 grain Hornady SX. After I glassbedded it a gunsmith bud of mine wanted to try pillar bedding it and I let him. The groups did not improve, nor did they get worse after the pillars were installed, which tells me I was right on the money with my glassbedding. No, I'm not going to have them recrowned, but looking at the crown job CZ does, it "looks" like crap. That's all I was saying. Tom Purdom  :-)

The finish quality on the crown means absolutly nothing as far as acuraccy is concerned. What counts is absolute squareness to the bore. Having one re-crowned on a local gunsmith's lathe is a 50-50 proposition, as far as better or worse, than what comes from the factory.

I had my 527 varmint 223 recrowned and it did improve accuracy noticeably. I am still in the load development stage. When i go to the range I usually shoot 10 5 shot groups and it is averaging in the .5's. I may be able to improve it a tad, but I do not expect a lot more.        I also have a 550 American in 270 that will average inside an inch for 5 shot groups and of course much better with 3 shot groups.

You know, it's strange how each of you has something good to say about your CZ.  These are the kind of remarks I use to hear about Remingtons.
I just ordered a CZ452 and suspect it will be the first of many over the years.  I guess the bottom line doesn't matter as much when most of your former customers have went elsewhere.  It's really sad, especially for those of us who would prefer to buy American.  Best wishes.
