Just got my 300 RUM , boy oh boy
« on: November 04, 2005, 09:43:03 AM »
Hey everyone I wanted to thank you for helping me decide on a 300 RUM rifle, I just bought it yesterday (I had it ordered a while ago)

My rifle is a remington 700 P (police edition) with the heavy barrel, it comes stock without a scope 9 lbs (with a nice scope it should be around 10 lbs)...... I have only shooten 1 shoot with it so far and man on man, I still can't belive the power and sound that thing makes lol

Unfortunarly This week I have spend over 1200 dollars on rifles, I bought the wal-mart mossberg 100 atr (present for my father) for 220 $ (10% discount) and this remington 700P for 900$.........I have no money whatsoever for a scope lol.....I am gonna put my old trekker 1.5-4.5X32 shotgun scope on my 700P until i can afford something better

My friend thinks that this 300RUM caliber is not a good choice for dangerous game.... even If I used 200 grain bullets, he thinks its still not a good choice what does everyone think ?  (I am no dangerous game hunter but I just wanna know the potential of this caliber, MAN 300 RUM IS SO FREAKING AWESOM I LOVE THAT THING)

As far as  dangerous game goes, I think you might be a victim of the high velocity hype the gun press has been foisting us lately. Big bullets at moderate velocity are what the professional hunters bet their lives on. I think it is foolish to argue with them.

First, congrats on your new toy.  I am curious, though, just how you plan to use it?

Congradulation on your 300 RUM. I have the BLD model 700  300 RUM. I use H1000 reloading it and the accuracy of it is great. At 200 yds I put the X hairs on the center of this 23/4" target and that is where the bullet went.
Right there not a 1/2" to the side but it went right there where I aimed at. :D

As I mentioned in my previous posts, I am not much of a hunter, most of my shooting that i do is in 30-06.... I do alot of range shooting (its a hoby of mine, been doing it for 3 years now).....

My friends go hunting ALOT and they are wanting me to go with them, so i might go sometime in the near future.  As far as what Im going to bring, i dunno this 300 RUM is my fav thing right now.... I feel asleep the first night i got it right next to me... I love it

I live in michigan, anyone know good places to go vermine hunting in michigan or how can i find out.... I have a friend that goes vermine hunting atleast 2-3 times a year, he wants me to join him (he uses 223 and 22 hornet) If i show up with a 300RUM he is going to bust out laughing.

Welcome to the 300RUM club.  I started out with a used 300rum didn't shoot all that well think is was more pilot error and a learning curve.  I picked a from a fellow shooter a brand new 300RUM Browning SS stalker he has this thing all trick out to even a Rich Bin  paint job.  I also shoot a 300wby,30-338mag and 300mag this Browning is one fine shooting rifle I do notice the difference as I sight all my 30cal dead on at 200yds and I have less bullet drop at 300yd than my other rifles.  I haven't had a chance to bench shoot it any further so really can say much.  I did chronograph some factory and afew test reload before I settled on this one load with 180 gr bullets I'll do some more playing this spring.  I didn't have any luck on bull elk or deer but have a late cow hunt maybe I'll get a chance to see how the 300rum performs yet.  I use Neil Jones custom shoulder bumping dies and have gotten 5 firing before FL sizing.  The factory is at 3264fps I did step up afew reloads and got some loose primer pockets.  I shot a 30-378wby mag and that is one that will loosen your teeth but got 3481fps with a 180 gr bullet.  Well good luck.

I also have a .300 RUM rem 700 Police, I mounted a leupold Mark 4 6.5-20x50 with mil dot reticle in Badger rings and 20 moa Badger Base, rifle also has a canjar trigger fitted. I am shooting 150 gr Nosler BT's and below are a couple of groups I Have shot the tightest group was .291" but  a max load and was a tad to hot so I backed off 2 grains and shot a .501" group (bullet just off the lands).
