About them claw extractors
« on: November 01, 2005, 06:56:53 PM »
Only recently taking bolt actions very seriously, I've come to understand that claw extractors are highly regarded in bolt actions, and have been able to appreciate the difference between a few different guns because of it.  At first I had the impression that all claw extractors were long Mauser type ones, then I saw Sako and Weatherby call their extractors claw extractors.  Well they're all big huge claws compared to the measly linear extractor on my Savage and the phanton extractor on my Remington, but they sure ain't Mausers.  So are the huge ones that run the length of the bolt called Mauser type claw extractors and the others not?

Far as I know, the only modern rifles with a Mauser type claw extractor are Ruger, Win M70 Classic, CZ, and M... M... what was it called?  Moz... Mous... Mauser!  Any others?

Also was surprised to see them coupled with button ejectors in some cases, or were none of these Mauser type?  Would love to just know more in general about extractors and different bolt action types.

That's the usual nomenclature. As far as new guns, plenty of smaller outfits are using the Mauser style, Kimber being one.
Many of the other extactor designs came about not because they were any better than the Mauser, but because they were cheaper to produce in the days of manually operated machinery. Modern CNC machines have closed the cost gap somewhat.

I've torn the head right off a split case with that phanton Remington extractor. Can't ask more'n that.   Mauser's extractor does more'n just extract a case, it prevents double loading on a short stroke.

My Remington extractor has pulled a couple shells apart. I can't complane about that. Those extractors in Rem. rifles are strong. :D

I have never seen a problem with the extractor until this yr.  A brand new 700, 7MM Rem mag would not pull the spent case out.  A examination of the bolt face indicated that it was undersized.  I have seen several 700's ejector not function as a result of poor maintenance.
