I don't mind snakes as long as I see them first. My youngest son is another matter. I took him and his older brother to the Selman ranch for a youth doe hunt a couple of weeks ago and was getting him set up on a limestone and quartz bluff overlooking a thicket where a doe had bedded down that morning. I am glassing the thicket when I hear my son say very quietly in a shakey voice, "Sssnnaaaake!" Then a little louder, "Ssssnnaaaaake!" I look over and see two Diamond Backs easing up over the ledge about 10 feet from where we were set up. :shock: They were about 4-5' long and were intertwined as they worked their way over the edge and after they crested the ridge headed straight for us. I eased back to see what they were going to do hoping they would mozy along so we could get set back up on the deer but my son wouldn't have any of it! We had ran over a prairie rattler with the pickup on the way in, then he had stepped on a tree snake walking in and now this! He had had enough! :bye: Can't say that I blame him... :roll:

Poor lil guy. That must have creeped him out. When I was younger a hoe handle just wasn't long enough for those rattlers in west Texas. :lol:

:-) I came upon a 2' prairie rattler last week (Nov.2) while bowhunting on my favorite WMA here in SW Oklahoma. It was 90 degrees here on the 2nd of November. Thats crazy! :roll:

Thats almost spooky. We dont have many dangerous snakes here. Supposed to be timber rattlers but in 39 years crawling under, over & thru the woods around here I havent seen none. Saw what I believe were copperheads twice & both times they were swimming & left real quick.
Nope, we're pretty safe snakewise here. My boys caught a 3 foot garden snake this summer. They found it anyway & I got it in a bucket. I let em keep it for a month or so feeding it toads from the yard but we let it go once the local amphibians got scarce. :grin:
Sorry for the ramble but I guess if I was from a place with dangerous snakes I'd be wanting to leave if there were a bunch around too. :-)

I have killed some big rattlesnakes here in Texas, normally I am not that concerned when I run up on one. But it seem every time I go Quail hunting a snake spoils my day. After seeing one I spent the rest of the day watching the ground even while approaching the dog on point. The dog just looks at me as if saying "what's up man, I pointed them and you never fired a shot."

A friend was bitten on the left hand several years ago when he reached down to pick up a downed dove, The snake got him on the skin between the thumb and pointing finger. It was hot, he had a cooler full of drinks, so he puts his hand in the ice water while his son drives him to the hospital. Wrong move. The cold water prevented the wound from bleeding and caused complications that almost cost him his hand. So remember, if you are ever bit, do not apply cold, let it bleed freely.
