Several weeks ago my wife and I had CW and his lovely wife as weekend house guests. This gave Tim and I chance to sit down together and discuss some issues with our forum. You may have noted some changes to the board in the past month as a result of our get together.

One thing Tim pointed out was that one of these days somebody was going to catch me on paint as my cannon truck is not painted. Well Terry C caught me, finally.

When I built the gun 20 years ago, I had no clue what color the truck should be, nor could I find reference to what color the truck should be. I have found in the past year what the correct color is.

The gun is due , over due for some maintenance. That isn't going to happen for a couple of years as the gun is headed for storage until I return from South Africa.

Right now the truck wears a heavy coat of spar varnish.

So, what color do you think is correct for this truck and why?

Good question. I have been wondering myself what I should do when I get the carriage built for that bronze howitzer that Powderkeg is building for me.
I am partial to an oil finish either BLO or tung.

Carriage color depends on whter your duplicating some original piece or just replicating a cannon.

How about red?

With red, the blood won't stand out.

Naval carriages tended to be painted red, along with the gun deck and interior bulkheads. This was so that blood from combat casualties wasn't obvious and demoralizing to the surviving gun crew members.

These are at yorktown Virginia.

This one is on the Constellation in Baltimore.

This one in the Navy Museum in DC.

Thease at a museum in Boonesboro Maryland.

A carronade on the constellation again.

So many choices!

Nice Gentleman. Red is what I thought the proper color should be. If my gun replicated a British or Revolutionary- War of 1812 piece then red is the color.

When I visited the Contellation, I questioned the correctness of the red trucks on the plastic cannons the display. The Living History Guide said that there is some controvorsy about that. He said that red would be correct for the first Contellation. As they have the current Constellation configured they think that red may be correct but they are still researching that because the Constellation covers the era when the color changed.

Nope Gentlemen, red is not the "correct" color for my gun. First you need to identify the piece. Time to do your research. The gun is fully identified on this board. Good luck. Have fun.

Your gun looks later that rev/1812 by the lack of ornamentation.
It looks like a near Civil Was era gun.

Those nice welds place it later than the 1920's though

.

It would look fine any color you pick out, cept purple!

Good eye Kap! The Tube replicates a gun that may have been used in the War of 1812, but not the Revolutionary War.

Yes during the renovation of this gun those welds will disappear.

I can assure you the truck will not be purple!

The tube looks alot like the 1/4 scale 1841 I have.

Well, the drawing I worked from to build my gun does indeed call it an M-1841. The rest of the material with the drawing repeatedly calls the gun an M-1814 Army rifle on a modified Navy truck. Per the information the gun retained the elevator from the original Army field gun carriage and doesn't use a quinn. The gun modeled came from a gun on the U.S.S. Cairo an Ironclad sunk by a mine at Vicksburg. I don't know which is correct 1841 or or 1814. I can find reference to the 1841 catagory and not the 1814, so I suspect 1841 is correct. Mr Green the author of the plans is no longer with us so I can't ask him his source or references. I suppose a letter to Vicksburg Battlefield Park will get me the correct model.

BTT Since John Pike also caught me. Anybody figured out what the correct color is yet?
