Weak magazine springs in C&R handguns
« on: October 29, 2005, 08:55:19 AM »
I had a few problems with weak magazine springs in C&R handguns.  I looked to buy new springs but found nothing so i deceided to take the mag apart and stretch the spring just a little.  My problem was the spring was pushing the bullet to the angled ramp at the top of the mag but it wasn't going to the full angle to feed it to the chamber. It would stay horizontal at the top of the mag so the spring was weak.  Lets face it some of these guns are pushing 60+ years now.  We really don't have too many options when it comes to mag springs when no one manufactures them. I did notice that one mag spring was twisted before i touched it so i straightened it out first so it can't bind in the mag plus i lubed the mag springs too so they can't bind on the mag housing too.  Even if you have a good mag its good to lube it anyway.

Know I am several months late on this, but Wolf Springs sells mag springs for many handguns.  If you are gonna put substantial number of rounds through a pistol old enough to be C&R, it would not hurt to replace all teh springs you can.  If you have a C&R license, they give you a dealer price on what you order.

I looked and they don't make it thats when i took it apart and found the spring all bent up and distorted after straighting it out it appears to feed ok now.  I retentioned it too and we have to be very careful when making it longer because sometimes too much tention is no good too.
